SCI Waymart Inmates Care for Fellow Inmates Who are in Hospice

SCI Waymart has launched a program where well-behaved inmates receive training to assist healthcare staff in providing hospice care such as feeding, bathing, and emotional support.


This program is one of several that are addressing increasing aging incarcerated Americans- 36% of inmates are over 50 years old, with prison conditions often aging individuals prematurely.


SCI Waymart is one of two prisons in Pennsylvania that have personal care units for inmates.

Lower Merion Nonprofit Celebrates 50+ Years of Helping Students

The Better Chance Lower Merion, founded in 1973, is an all-male boarding program in Ardmore that gives economically disadvantaged and underserved students the opportunity to study at Lower Merion High School while living with tutors in a supportive residential house.


The Better Chance provides comprehensive support including academic advising, SAT prep, hosting families, and access to all school resources.


Nearly all ABC-LM graduates pursue a four-year degree with a 95% completion rate.

Teacher Shortages are Hitting PA’s Urban and Rural Schools 

Pennsylvania is facing a deepening teacher shortage, with more than one third of districts, especially rural and low-income areas, reporting vacancies in vital subjects such as STEM and special education.


New teacher certifications are also down approximately 74% since 2012, with more emergency certifications issued than standard teaching certificates.

Millions in US Live Where Doctors Don’t Practice and Telehealth Doesn’t Reach

Millions of Americans live in “dead zones”, where both reliable high-speed internet and access to primary and behavioral health care are disproportionately inaccessible.


Residents in dead zones have significantly poorer health outcomes, including higher rates of chronic disease and shorter life expectancy, made worse by weak broadband preventing Telehealth access.

A Report on Child Labor Points Up Progress and Challenges

Despite a global decrease of 20 million child laborers over the last five years, approximately 183 million children, including 54 million in hazardous conditions, are still working instead of attending school.


In Asia, the percentage of child workers has dropped dramatically, but numbers remain concerning in Sub-Saharan Africa.


Factors for child labor include limited educational opportunity, agricultural dependency, and global conflicts.
