Stay up to date with Instituto!

Karina Ayala-Bermejo, President and CEO of Instituto del Progreso Latino joined a coalition of national and community leaders from across the Latino community on Capitol Hill to demand accountability and swift congressional action in response to the Trump administration’s harmful policies.

We must continue to call on federal policymakers to challenge these actions as they continue to negatively impact our communities.

This unfair treatment has resulted in fear, which has negatively impacted attendance in our schools, diminished our efforts to combat food insecurity and attempted to create barriers to our citizenship program. This dangerous rhetoric and divisive narrative only increases hate crimes, and creates division in our community and fear for our families. We are the economic fuel that strengthens our nation, and it is time our country acknowledges this.” – Karina Ayala-Bermejo, President and CEO of Instituto del Progreso Latino

Latino Leaders Unite on Capitol Hill and Demand Accountability from the Trump Administration

Instituto stands with all immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers

Mayor Washington signed the nation’s first executive order in 1985, establishing Chicago as a sanctuary for immigrants. On this day so many came together to voice our objections to efforts to weaken existing protections. President and CEO Karina Ayala-Bermejo was proud to stand alongside friends, elected officials, and faith-based and community leaders of all backgrounds committed to keeping Chicago a Welcoming City for all. Instituto del Progreso Latino stands with all our immigrants, refugees, migrants, and asylum seekers.

In September of 2022, Instituto responded to the influx of Recent arrivals to Chicago by launching Project AMOR (Asylum Migrant Outreach Response). In conjunction with the City of Chicago, Instituto created an Amazon Wishlist to mobilize donation efforts for this new population. Since the launch of the Wishlist, over $385,000 in essential items such as clothes, toiletries, diapers, and hygiene products, have been purchased by generous donors to help aid migrants. Instituto has also directly assisted over 8,000 asylum seekers by helping them obtain essential items as well as providing them with legal aid and financial literacy direction.

With a surge of new arrivals that began in May of 2023, Instituto del Progreso Latino began accepting physical donations of new and unused clothes and other essential items to its buildings. Additionally, over 1000 community members have signed up to volunteer and assist with Instituto's Project AMOR efforts.

Your generous, tax-deductible gift will directly support Instituto's efforts to assist the recent influx of migrants to Chicago.
