A two-prong generous gift from Frances Coles will help Berkeley Law’s Center for the Study of Law & Society expand its already sizable impact and influence.

A global hub for scholars in the multidisciplinary field, CSLS has been hailed by former Law and Society Association president Howard Erlanger as “without a doubt the premier law and society research center in the world.” Another former president (Lawrence Friedman) called it “a magnet for scholars all over the world whose international influence is incalculable.”

“Dr. Coles’ gift to establish an initial endowment enables CSLS to plan its long-term future, including growing the endowment to expand programming,” says Pamela Erickson, the center’s executive director. “In addition, her five-year fellowship and research gift allows us to provide direct support to graduate students through substantial fellowship support and small research grants.” Read more>>
The pandemic forced the Berkeley Center for Law and Business conference online for a second straight year, but it didn't stop crackling conversations like the one between Berkeley Law Professor Abbye Atkinson (left) and journalist Anita Raghavan.

After two days of wide-ranging conversations about scams, lies, and charlatans in the financial sector, veteran business journalist Diana B. Henriques took the webcam spotlight to sum up the fourth edition of Berkeley Fraud Fest and bid farewell to one of the industry’s most destructive con men, Bernie Madoff, who died in prison earlier this year.

“As citizens, we are wrestling with a post-truth era in politics. It’s clear from Fraud Fest Four that we’ve also entered into a post-truth period of investing,” Henriques said. “I have long believed that there were at least two places where truth stood a fighting chance: in an honest courtroom, and in a free marketplace. That belief has certainly been challenged yesterday and today." Read more>>

A Syrian refugee camp in the outskirts of Athens. Since 2011, more than 6.6 million Syrians have been forced to flee their country and another 6.7 million remain internally displaced.

With an estimated 80 million refugees and displaced people facing increased uncertainty and growing crises, this year’s World Refugee Day that took place on June 20 carried added significance.

That urgency is evident at Berkeley Law. Faculty lead seminal research and often coordinate their efforts through the Berkeley Interdisciplinary Migration Initiative, clinics provide vital legal assistance, centers and institutes offer robust programming, and student groups such as the International Refugee Assistance Project advocate for rights and protections. Read more>>

Leadership in the Legal Profession | Virtual Course
Next cohorts launch in September
Are you confident in your skills as a leader? How do you approach client development, business strategy, and managing teams? While modern legal training prepares lawyers to become legal experts, it does little to support lawyers in becoming strong people and project managers. Leadership in the Legal Profession is a 10-week, virtual business school-style course for legal professionals who want to challenge intuitive approaches to leadership and management, as well as learn new mental models and dynamic leadership skills that can be quickly applied to their practice. Topics include systems thinking, behavioral science, motivation, agile innovation, and decision leadership, among others. Learn more and apply>>
