Congratulations to our 2024 student award winners! Fikayo Ajeigbe '24 CLAS received the W.E.B. Du Bois Medallion of Excellence in Sociology, and Paisley Hahn '24 CLAS received the Edward Sutherland Medallion of Excellence in Criminology. The Lawrence J. McGarry Award was presented to Jameson Ford '24 CLAS.

Welcome Lorena Ávila, PhD, and Guillermo J. Escaño!

Lorena Ávila, PhD, received her doctorate at the School of Criminal Justice at Rutgers University, Newark in 2024. She specializes in Colombia and Latin America’s state-building and peace-keeping initiatives, focusing on criminal justice issues across the Americas and human rights protection mechanisms. Currently, her research in the United States focuses on the role of law and legal bureaucracies in propelling inequalities through the immigration system. Her research aims to give visibility to the experiences, resources and challenges of migrant families and migrant’s rights advocacy networks navigating inequality and racialization propelled by bureaucratic structures in place. | | |

Guillermo Jesús Escaño will receive his doctorate from the University of Albany’s School of Criminal Justice in the spring of 2025. His research focuses on crime and violence in Latin America and the Caribbean, organized criminal groups, the structural and cultural causes and consequences of violence and criminal justice policy (evidence-based practices). He is a quantitative researcher, mainly using panel and time series models. His work is published in multiple outlets, including Justice Quarterly, The British Journal of Criminology and Routledge.

Faculty Research and News Highlights
Lorena Ávila, PhD, with coauthor Sarah Tosh, PhD, published the article “The institutional hearing program and the incarceration-to-deportation pipeline” in Critical Criminology.
Meredith Bergey, PhD, published the article “Medicalization in global context: Current insights, pressing questions, and future directions through the case of ADHD” in Sociology Compass.
Glenn Bracey, PhD, along with coauthor Michael O. Emerson, PhD, published the book The Religion of Whiteness: How Racism Distorts Christian Faith.
Guillermo Jesús Escaño with coauthor William Alex Pridemore, PhD, published the article “Population-level alcohol consumption and homicide rates in Latin America: A fixed effects panel analysis, 1961–2019” in The British Journal of Criminology. They also wrote a blog post featuring the article for the Institute of Alcohol Studies.
Lance Hannon, PhD, and Meredith Bergey, PhD, published the article “Policy variation in the external evaluation of research for tenure at U.S. universities” in the journal Research Evaluation.
Brian Jones, PhD, published the book The Pursuit of Happiness in America: A Sociological Perspective.
Max Osborn, PhD, with coauthors Tanyanne Ball, PhD, and Valli Rajah, PhD, published the article “Peer support work in the context of intimate partner violence: A scoping review” in the journal Trauma, Violence, & Abuse.
Max Osborn, PhD, was interviewed by Teen Vogue for the article “Brandon Teena was failed by the American legal system and the media” about anti-trans violence.

Madison Moser '22 CLAS is an aspiring registered nurse who is currently completing her capstone at Denver Health. She details how her degree in sociology has been critical to providing patient centered care, particularly for vulnerable populations. The sociology courses she has taken have inspired her to always consider how larger societal structures impact individual health and help ensure that her decisions are both medically and socially sound. | |
