March Updates

A Unanimous Vote

“Alone, we can do so little; together, we can do so much.” -- Helen Keller

Thank you to all community members who showed up, spoke, or emailed the City Council in support of Interfaith’s new permanent Family Shelter. The City Council unanimously voted to award a grant to support this much-needed program for area families. With an average 10-year wait for Section 8 housing, this shelter will provide a safe place for 10-12 families at a time, while providing them with resources and tools to help them on their path toward once again being independent. We are grateful for the support of the local community as we prepare to open the doors of North County’s only 24-hour Family Shelter.

Agenda Item-10

The Affordable Housing Struggle

Recently, through Adult Protective Services, we received a referral for a senior client who was about to lose her home of 9 years and was on the brink of homelessness. Through Interfaith’s Home Safe program, our Senior Services case manager was able to place this vulnerable individual in a motel until locating affordable shared housing for her at an Independent Living Home (ILH). The senior is now safely housed in a shared living environment where she can socialize with other tenants and avoid isolation.

Our Home Safe program works to provide low-income area seniors with affordable shared housing. The average cost of a shared room in North County is currently $900 a month and the number of ILHs is very limited. If you have a rental unit and can help, please consider applying to the Independent Living Association and help provide seniors with safe, stable housing.
