CATHEDRAL DAY
Cathedral Day 2023: Living Water

SATURDAY, APRIL 22, 10:30–2 P.M., registration required for free lunch

18 members of the Saint Mark’s Community, including five youth, will be confirmed or received into the Episcopal Church this Saturday, April 22, along with dozens of other folks from around the Diocese of Olympia! Cathedral Day is a time for connecting across communities, experiencing your cathedral in a new light... and it's a lot of fun. There’s something for everyone—no matter your age! This year's Cathedral Day coincides with Earth Day. The theme of "Living Water" will be reflected in the liturgy and in the day's activities, which emphasize creation care.
A liturgy of Holy Eucharist with the rites of confirmation, reception, and reaffirmation for candidates from parishes near and far will begin at 10:30 a.m., opening with a grand, colorful procession of parish banners. There will be a supervised children’s corner with quiet activities during the liturgy. After the service, all are invited to enjoy lunch from food trucks and participate in activities for all ages.

The schedule for the day is as follows:

  • 9 a.m. — Confirmands, Sponsors, Clergy, Church Representatives arrive for rehearsal, meet with Bishop Melissa Skelton
  • 10:10 a.m. — Procession forms: candidates, sponsors, clergy and banner holders line up. All parishes in the diocese are encouraged to send a representative with their parish banner for the procession, whether or not there are confirmation candidates from your parish.
  • 10:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. — Confirmation liturgy
  • 12 p.m. — Food trucks ready for lunch service
  • 12:30–2 p.m. — Activities, fellowship, and fun!

Activities in the afternoon include:

  • smoothie station & healthy food demonstration, courtesy of Nurturing Roots Farm
  • Leffler garden tour, Greenbelt tour, and Cathedral Watershed Walk
  • Rogation Day resources
  • carbon tracker sign-ups for households and churches
  • demonstration of the mighty Flentrop organ
  • recycled paper airplane-making and launch from the organ loft
  • a collaborative art project
  • planting in the garden
  • a bounce house, sponsored by Camp Huston
  • opportunities to learn more about Creation Care, Circles of Color, Holy Hikes, and Pride Day

Everyone is welcome to attend the liturgy at 10:30 a.m., and if you are unable to attend, you are still most welcome to participate in the afternoon activates and enjoy some delicious food. Please register all attendees in order to receive your food truck vouchers. Register using this link.

SUNDAY, MAY 7, 4:30 P.M., in the cathedral nave and livestreamed

On the first Sunday of each month (October–June) a service of Choral Evensong is offered in a traditional Anglican cathedral style by the Evensong Choir. The service on May 7 will include Josef Rheinberger's beloved Abendlied, a setting of the simple words spoken by the disciples to the resurrected Christ while walking on the road the Emmaus in the Gospel of Luke: "Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is now nearly over..."

ANNOUNCEMENTS
A Note from Choir School Director Rebekah Gilmore

Nearing the completion of my eighth year of full-time employment as the Director of the Choir School and Associate Musician, and my thirteenth year working with the Choir School, I’m filled with gratitude and excitement to have a six-week sabbatical, beginning April 24. (The Choir School calendar as participants have it remains accurate.)

During these weeks, I will visit area children’s choir programs to get a sense of the choral landscape in the Puget Sound region as well as pay a visit to the music program at Trinity Cathedral in Portland as it is being refreshed by their new Canon Musician. I hope to return with new teaching tools, repertoire, rehearsal techniques and inspiration. In early May, I will take a trip to Galway, Ireland where I will be hosted by dear friends who have recently relocated there. A significant part of my lineage is Irish and so this is a bucket-list trip for me as well as the occasion to visit a few choral programs there.

The other facet of my sabbatical is a time of intentional reflection and exploration of ways to deepen my life of prayer and contemplation while being a full-time working mom. I look forward to the gift of time to build a repertoire of micro-devotions and practices that are as much about the headspace of sacramental living and body movement as it is periods of silent meditation. It will be my pleasure to present a forum for the larger parish on the practices I develop during this time and reflections on my sabbatical experience.

—Rebekah Gilmore, Choir School Director, Associate Musician, and Interim Director of Youth Ministry
Meal Train for Deborah Brown

The cathedral Community Meal Delivery Ministry seeks to provide food and comfort to parishioners recovering from illness, surgery, or a new baby. There are times in our lives when friends and family ask, "What can I do to help out?" The answer is usually to help them with a meal. When many friends provide support through a meal, MealTrain keeps everyone organized. Deborah Brown, a beloved and active member of the cathedral community, has recently come home from the hospital. A fellow Cathedral Choir member set up the following MealTrain for Deborah:

Thank you to those who have already volunteered to make meals. We are currently looking for a volunteer to coordinate future meal delivery efforts. Please contact our Curate, Linzi Stahlecker, if you'd like to take on this simple task: [email protected]
