With Entrepreneurial Pursuits, what is your definition?


Derived from the Old French verb entreprendre, “to undertake,” one description is the state of being an entrepreneur who organizes, leads and takes on business risks, with mission-critical goals including:


  • applying unique talents 
  • meeting market demands
  • motivating professional development
  • developing career opportunities
  • generating economic value


…and enjoying the journey, roller coaster and all. 

Throughout entrepreneurial phases, there are ever-present challenges to diagnose and treat. In coordinating resources and team building to achieve progressive goals, numerous macro aspects are fundamentally outside our control, such as economic trends, national healthcare policies, aggressive (quasi) competition, insurance reimbursement and pandemics. 


This underscores another influential concept, Locus of Control, which as referenced here, was theorized by psychologist Julian Rotter in 1954, to learn why some behaviors stick while others languish.


As stated: 


“The concept behind locus of control is fairly simple. Our lives are full of actions and outcomes. Each of us will ascribe a certain locus of control over these outcomes. The theory states that we will place the location, or locus, either externally or internally. If we place the locus of control externally, we are likely to blame the outcome on fate, luck, or happenstance. If we place the locus of control internally, we are likely to believe our own actions determine the outcome.”


To pointedly express, an Internal Locus of Control mentality is ideal to strive for.

Please try this thought experiment which may open your eyes to enlightening pathways. At a quiet time, walk through your clinic, pretending to experience a patient’s first visit. When traversing from reception to testing, to consultation or final fitting, in each spot, contemplate what questions are common in those pivotal moments?”
