Why did you choose Delta State?
Delta State holds a special place in my heart for many reasons, which I will elaborate on later. However, choosing Delta State University for my MBA was not an easy decision. Initially, I was considering schools in various states. Then, I came across Delta State University in the US News rankings. I was impressed to see how their MBA program was outperforming top regional schools throughout Mississippi.
What truly caught my attention was the success of their alumni, many of whom are placed in top-tier companies worldwide. After meeting with the international advisor, I knew this was the right school for me. The diverse curriculum and the opportunity to connect with a multicultural student body from around the globe made Delta State University the perfect choice.
What have you been doing since you graduated from DSU?
After graduating from DSU, I pursued my MS-IS at Texas A&M International University, where I was awarded a fellowship and completed my degree in 2018. Upon finishing my MS-IS, I began my professional career at HOPE Credit Union as a Senior Data Analyst. After nearly two years, I transitioned to a role as a Marketing Data Analyst at C Spire in Madison, Mississippi.
Following a year and a half at C Spire, I achieved my dream of joining Southwest Airlines, one of the most influential and admired airlines globally and a Fortune 500 company. Currently, I am a Crew Analytical Consultant in the pilot domain. My role focuses on enhancing crew business processes and improving efficiencies in pilot scheduling and planning through data-driven techniques.
How did DSU prepare you for what you're doing now?
DSU not only established my professional foundation but also nurtured my personal growth through structured schedules and the pursuit of personal goals. Working alongside top-tier professors who mentored me was a privilege. I learned invaluable problem-solving methods that prepared me for real-life challenges. Courses such as SAP ERP, SAP business intelligence tools, SQL, and Machine Learning not only equipped me for my current role but also expanded my skill set.
DSU's unique offering of aviation degrees in Mississippi was a significant advantage. Exploring their state-of-the-art facilities reignited my passion for aviation, a passion that ultimately led me to success at one of the world's foremost airlines, Southwest Airlines, a leader in the US aviation industry. Additionally, I had the privilege of meeting influential figures such as David Abney, the former global CEO of UPS, who also graduated from DSU with a Bachelor's in Business Administration.
What’s a favorite DSU memory?
Oh, it's not just one memory—it's a long list that I cherish dearly. I can vividly recall my first day, feeling a mix of trembling nerves and excitement as I entered orientation and attended my first class of the session. DSU welcomed me warmly, setting the tone for an unforgettable journey.
And then there was the day I graduated, a moment etched in my heart forever. Receiving the presidential award brought tears to my eyes, knowing I had made my family especially my parents (Nisar Ahmed Raja & Perveen Akhter) proud and fulfilled their dreams. DSU has always been more than a place; it's a part of me that travels wherever I go. I keep DSU memories and souvenirs close, treasures that remind me of my time there and refresh my spirit whenever I need a dose of nostalgia.
One particular highlight was when I served as a tour facilitator for a delegation of Chinese students. It was an incredible experience, thanks in part to Dr. Christy's [Dr. Christy Riddle] unwavering support. Together, we explored new horizons and shared moments I never imagined, creating bonds that expanded my worldview and enriched my life.
I am proud to be, forever carrying the spirit of DSU with me.
