Jennifer Bonine and I met in Davos in January at the World Economic Forum, where there were 24% women and far fewer people of color.  We have work to do. It is encouraging, however, to see inclusive leaders like Jennifer boldly launching their companies and pioneering in the male-dominated field of Artificial Intelligence with her company, PinkLion.AI.

J ennifer, you are a pioneering woman in the male-dominated field of technology.  What influences in your early years to prepared you for this?

I am a native Minnesotan and graduate of St. Thomas where the mission is to become a morally responsible leader who thinks critically, acts wisely, and works skillfully to advance the common good.  I started working in IT leadership right out of college and knew I wanted to form my own Minnesota-based technology corporation so I could live and work in my own community and contribute as a business owner with social integrity.

What has been the hardest part of your authentic journey?

I believe some of my best ideas and solutions were ignored because I was often the only female in the room.  I even conducted an experiment:  If I made a suggestion of merit that was turned down, a male colleague I enlisted would allow some time to pass and bring up the identical suggestion.  Without fail, that suggestion received positive feedback.  I seek to change the notion that I need a "male colleague" to be the technical expert when I am fully capable of representing my expertise.  When we reach a point where all people are judged on the merit of their ideas and solutions, then we will have succeeded.

After being an executive at Accenture, ExpressScrips, Target, Oracle and tap|QA, you launch PinkLion.  What do you most want to accomplish?

My PinkLion co-founders Andrew Birkholz and Rick Faulise love Minnesota as much as I do, and were also interested in starting a technology company that would revolutionize digital and social awareness in the AI sector.  I would say our most important focus, and the accomplishment I hope to influence in tech, is PinkLion's mission to train, educate, and empower our client's employees to use our sustainable first-of-its kind technology platform and create a next-generation of AI technology skills.

Your enterprising work has taken you all over the world.  What message do you have for young women who aspire to becoming a global technology leader as you are?

I believe young women can leverage AI for good in the world.  To women in STEM and STEAM I say:  'Find your fierce' and embrace your authentic self.  Surround yourself with a community of people who support and nurture the authentic version of you.  Set bold goals and believe in your potential to realize those goals.

Jennifer Bonine is the first female Artificial Intelligence testing tech CEO.  PinkLion.AI represents the United Nations sustainable development goals of equality, inclusivity, and promise in AI technology. They are the only company successfully integrating, delivering, and managing AI-based testing for gaming platforms and games without access to the code.  PinkLion partners with Test.AI to retrain client's workforces, resolving AI testing challenges previously considered impenetrable.  Employing a human engagement and AI-first strategy, Jennifer collaborates with entertainment, gaming, media, and sports industries facing AI-based scrutiny.

A guest speaker at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Jennifer will also be featured at the UN's AI for Good summit.  She is a member of AI Girls and TeamWomen, a supporter of Lead the Way, and is a Founding Board Member of the US bid for a Minnesota World Expo 2027.  PinkLion is a Google (Gradient) AI Backed Company.

Join us to recognize the most inclusive leaders in key industries for their innovations and bold actions to promote access and equity for women, people of color, and underrepresented populations in their recruiting, development, senior management on their boards, and in their pipeline strategies from education to employment.

The DAF offers immense power and flexibility for giving prior to the year's end as you plant seeds of generous intention for 2020 and the decade ahead.

When you contribute to GlobalMindED, you support students like Emanuel Walker whose story is below. He was in the class of 2018. Since 2015, we have served more than 300 students by connecting them to role models, mentors, internships and jobs. Your generous support will allow us to take our work 10x and reach these talented students at scale who lack the resources and support we provide. Your support also helps teachers who can't afford the conference fees, faculty at colleges which are under resourced and students who persist at those universities despite food insecurity and/or housing insecurity.

Join the #NeedHerScience Campaign that is aimed at addressing journal-level gender bias. For decades, studies have demonstrated gender bias in publishing. This may occur at various stages in the process, including at the level of the
journals. The equitable inclusion of women editors at every level is long overdue. Addressing journal gender bias starts at the top.

AMWA is a strategic partner for the Need Her Science Campaign which is part of the Be Ethical Campaign. More information is available at www.SheLeadsHealthcare.com.

The goal: To raise awareness about gender bias in publishing and share with stakeholders, including journal editors and owners, the overall number of scientists, healthcare professionals and others who have taken the pledge. The pledge can be taken anonymously. Educators and others are encouraged to take the pledge and share information about this issue with colleagues and trainees.

GET INVOLVED
Here are 3 quick and easy things you can do to join the #NeedHerScience Campaign: 1. Disseminate the infographic Tips for Publishing in Medical Journals.
2. Take the #NeedHerScience pledge.
3. Encourage others to take the pledge.

TAKE THE PLEDGE
PLEDGE: "As part of determining where to submit my manuscripts, I will look at the list of editors and consider whether a journal has equitably included qualified women at every level."
