  A Reunion of Science and Religion, Head and Heart
Earth Day Weekend Celebration with International Environmental Leaders

First Unitarian Universalist Church of San Diego, who last week voted to become a sanctuary church, will hold an intergenerational Earth Day weekend celebration, beginning at 1:30 p.m., Sat., April 21, 4190 Front St. San Diego, CA 92103.

Veerabhadran Ramanathan, eminent climate scientist and advisor to Pope Francis, and the Rev. John Cobb Jr., environmentalist, author, and renowned theologian, will speak about uniting people throughout the world to help save the Earth from environmental catastrophe.

Ramanathan is a distinguished professor at Scripps Institute of Oceanography at University of California San Diego and UNESCO Professor of Climate and Policy TERI University, New Delhi, India. In 1975, Ramanathan discovered the greenhouse effect of halocarbons. He works to bring scientists, religious leaders and policy makers together to avoid the consequences of unsustainable actions.  

Cobb is a scholar in the field of  process philosophy  and theology. The author of more than 50 books he is described as one of the most significant theologians of the past century. His is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and has been a major influence in the ecologic movement in China assisting in promoting the government's goal of becoming an "ecological civilization" founding 35 Process Centers at Chinese universities.

Cobb will preach at Church for Our Common Home in the Rancho Penasquitos area on Sunday, Earth Day April 22, at 10 a.m. 13014 Calle De las Rosas, San Diego, CA 92129. “God’s Call to Earthism” about how, “God's creation is so seriously threatened, our call now is to focus on the whole Earth system, that is, to Earthism.  The greatest enemy of God and the Earth that has ever dominated history is economism. Jesus was clear about this. ‘You cannot serve both God and wealth.’"  

Cobb and Ramanathn, in association with the work of Pope Francis, are a monumental force in helping to unite science and religion in the service of humanity and all of creation.

The Sikh community has donated an Indian vegetarian dinner, representing “the equality and oneness of all humankind.”  RSVP at www.earthdayreunion.eventbrite.c om requested. Interfaith prayers before dinner and dancing after dinner with a live band. Children will perform ecologic musical numbers. Earth Justice Organizations will be available for a popcorn reception with live music. The program includes interactive music with Marshall Voit and the Martin Luther King community choir and giant rod puppets. Events both days will be live streamed on Church for Our Common Home Facebook page. The suggested donation is $10 for the afternoon program and reception. Child care is available for afternoon program.
