UN Decade of Ocean Science

Scripps has just re-signed our MOU with
Ningbo University
in China, first signed in 2010. Dr. Bill Gerwick has been collaborating with the University on natural products research. In early November, Dr. Gerwick visited Ningbo, and had a signing ceremony with the President, Qiuhua Nie.
Dr. Gerwick also stayed to participate in
International Symposium on Marine Biopharmaceutical and Food Research
which engaged experts in the field to discuss international cooperation going forward.

INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT

Argo
is a global program that deploys robotic floats to measure the temperature and salinity of the ocean. These sensors continually monitor the first 2,000 meters of the ocean and transmit data via satellite at the surface. First deployed in 1999, there are now almost 4,000 Argo floats throughout the global oceans, from the poles to the tropics and everywhere in between. Over 2 million temperature and salinity profiles have been gathered, and the data is freely available worldwide.
While Scripps is heavily involved in the Argo program, it is a global effort, with over 30 countries contributing to the array of floats. Several island nations in the South Pacific also assist with Argo deployments or other aspects of the project. The effort is lead by an international steering committee, with members from over 20 countries, including
Dean Roemmich
and
Megan Scanderbeg
from Scripps. Other Scripps scientists in the Argo program include Nathalie Zilberman, Sarah Purkey, and John Gilson. The Scripps Instrument Development Group designs and produces Argo floats, including over 500 of the presently active array. Argo contributes to several other international monitoring projects including the World Climate Research Program CLIVAR, Global Climate Ocean Data Assimilation Experiment, and the Global Ocean Observing System.

Argo's extensive dataset has been used in curriculum development for all ages as well as public outreach on changing ocean conditions. Over 3,000 scientific research papers have used Argo data, and its robust dataset is contributing to longterm global observations that will be invaluable for monitoring climate change impacts. International research centers in Australia, China, France, India, Italy, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Norway, the UK, and the US monitor the global and regional data produced by Argo. Their analysis can give an early warning of drastic temperature and salinity changes, such as those seen in El Niño episodes, as well as changes in ocean circulation. At present, Argo is expanding with new Deep Argo Floats that measure to the ocean floor (6000 m) and adding biogeochemical sensors (BGC Argo) which will observe ocean acidification, deoxygenation, and ecosystem variability.
The information collected by Argo is so important the project was named a priority area in the Federal
report
Science and Technology for America's Oceans: A Decadal Vision,
published by the National Science and Technology Council's Subcommittee on Ocean Science and Technology.
