Options After Graduation

Congratulations to all of our recent Kent State graduates! Now that you have received your diploma and are ready to start your new life as a Kent State University alum, what are your options as an international graduate? Do you want to work? Are you hoping to travel the United States? Below are your options now that you have completed your degree at Kent State.
  1. Study: You can always head back to school! You can undertake another program at the same level or you can move up. The choice is yours, but you can continue your studies after you complete your program. Learn more by contacting our International Admissions team at
  2. Work: Post-Completion OPT gives you the option of working after graduation in your field of study. Build your resume by working in the U.S. You can start your OPT application today by reviewing our OPT Webpage. You can learn more by contacting
  3. Return Home: After your program end date, you have 60 days that are known as your "grace period." This is when you can travel the U.S., meet up with friends, or relax before heading home and starting a career.
If your I-20 does not show your program end date as May 20, 2018 yet, we will be updating it as soon as we have the graduation list. You have until July 18th to make a decision, but remember if you are applying for OPT you should start gathering your documents now as it will take time for us to help you through the process. Scam Alert for International Students

The Office of Global Education has recently learned that international students are being targeted as victims of scams. In such cases, students have received phone calls from persons claiming they are from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) of United States Government. The scam artist tells the student that the IRS miscalculated his/her tax return, that the student owes an additional large sum of money and will be arrested by the police if he/she does not pay the extra amount. Typically, the victim is instructed to pay the money by purchasing gift cards from retailers such as Walmart or Target and sending them to the scam artist.

Do not become a victim of this type of scam. No one from the U.S. Government would contact you by telephone about such matters or request payment in such a manner. If you do receive such a call, do not give the caller any personal information. Copy the phone number,  then block the number on your phone. Do not purchase any gifts cards or send any money in any form. Instead, immediately contact Student Legal Services for further help and assistance.

Phone  : (330)672-9550
You can also report such scamming efforts directly to the IRS at its special scam/phishing website.
Curricular Practical Training (CPT)

A student is eligible for CPT if:
  1. He or she is in valid F-1 status at the time of application and has been in full-time status on the same SEVIS record for one academic year at the same educational level (Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctoral) preceding the CPT application.
  2. The student abides by all rules surrounding full-time course registration while on CPT. Full-time CPT authorization is comparable to a full course of study, if it is required by their program.
  3. The CPT experience is either:
    • Satisfying a program requirement placed on all students, or
    • Optional, meaning the student will register for coursework in their program of study in the concurrent term to represent the CPT experience (example: an internship or independent study credit).
No matter if the work is voluntary or paid, the student must BE AP PROVED for CPT before they begin working For more information, please visit our  Curricular Practical Training webpage.
