Immigration Tip of the Week: Program Extension

F-1 and J-1 students are required to maintain their status by completing their program in the specified time given on either their I-20 or DS-2019. However, if the student's I-20 or DS-2019 will expire before the student graduates and the student is able to present information that more time is needed to complete his or her academic program, the student may be eligible for a  Program Extension The guidelines stipulate that a student is eligible to apply for an extension if there was a change in the academic plan, an unexpected research problem, a documented illness, or for other compelling academic issues. Do you think you might need more time to finish your academic program? Discuss your estimated graduation with your Academic Advisor and, if you do, please complete the  Program Extension Request Form . Contact an ISSS Advisor to answer any additional questions.

Spring Break 2018
Spring Break Travel Safety Tips

After nine busy weeks of classes, homework, tests, and cold weather, you are probably looking forward to spring break as an opportunity to relax! Whether you're staying in Kent, OH or traveling for spring break, keep these safety tips in mind!
  • Eat healthy & stay active - Having fun takes energy. The best way to maintain this energy is to eat a variety of foods - including fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Drink a lot of water, and stay active. Resist the temptation to relax on the couch for a week and eat pizza!
  • Protect yourself from the sun - although it can be tempting to stay in the hot sun all day after five months of cold weather, remember that your skin needs protection from UV rays! Wear sunscreen with at least SPF 15.
  • Watch your step - don't be tempted to engage in high risk activities without making sure they're safe! Be sure to use appropriate safety gear, such as seat belts, life vests, or knee pads. Create a code word to let your friends know if you are in an uncomfortable situation and need their help. If you are planning to be separated from friends, make sure to establish a time and date to meet up.
  • Plan a successful trip - if you are traveling, know what's happening en route and at your travel destination. Make sure you have the physical address and telephone number of your destination, as well as directions before you leave Kent. Are vaccinations required for the places that you'll travel? Is the water safe to drink? Consider all of these things ahead of time.
  • Take a copy of your passport - there is no worse way to end your vacation than to realize that your passport has been lost or stolen. Make sure that you have a copy, just in case (it's even a good idea to have a copy with you and to leave a copy at home).
  • Relax and have fun!
