December Graduates: Your Options and OPT
If you are graduating this semester, it is time to decide whether you want to apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT) or something else. There are four different options available to you once you complete your program. You have until February 16, 2019 to decide whether you would like to:
  • Apply for OPT;
  • Apply to a new program at KSU;
  • Transfer your SEVIS to a new institution and start a new academic program; or
  • Return home.
Many of our students choose to apply for OPT, which allows you to work for one year following your graduation, but the application process can be confusing. In order to prepare you for OPT, if that is what you choose, we have a number of dates and times available for our OPT Workshops. We did add more options this semester, per student feedback.

Graduation Invitation Letters
If you are graduating this December, congratulations! Many international students want their family and/or friends to visit for graduation. Often times, these individuals will need a visa to enter the United States. In order to prepare them for a visa interview, you can provide them support by writing them an invitation letter. We offer a guide, along with an example letter, on our Invitation Letter Guideline page to help you. You will also want to send them a copy of your transcripts to demonstrate you are a current student enrolled in courses at Kent State University. Transcripts can be ordered online through the Registrar's Office . Once again, congratulations on your graduation; we look forward to seeing your friends here on campus!
Showcase Your Home Country at a Cultural Cafe!
We are now scheduling for Spring 2019 Cultural Cafes!
What is a Cultural Café?
International students and scholars represent their home country by giving a short presentation about something that makes their country unique. Presentations are diverse and can include history, highlights, and information about interesting people, places, or things. They can include music, dance, games, discussion, and more - it's up to you!

Did we mention that there is food? Our Cultural Café coordinator will work with you and with Dining Services to prepare two traditional foods from your culture (an entrée and a dessert).
Cultural Cafe Schedule, Spring Semester 2019
February 5, March 19, April 9
Are you interested in presenting or learning more? Contact  Angelia Zielke, Event Coordinator for International Student & Scholar Services.

International Student Showcase: Meet Yunyao Jiang
Yunyao Jiang is a graduate student from China studying architecture. He decided come to Kent State six years ago for his undergraduate degree. At just 17 years old, he left his home country and came to KSU enrolling in the architecture program. After one year in ESL, he moved on to his bachelor's degree, which he completed in four years. Upon graduation, he applied for OPT, optional practical training, and was offered a job opportunity in Cleveland, working for an architecture firm for a year. Now he is completing his master's degree in architecture and plans on graduating in the summer of 2019.
Yunyao chose to study architecture because of his love for drawing and painting.  He says, "Drawing up plans is a way to express what I have thought up in my head and put it on paper. Architecture makes people think a certain way about society and I like to use that idea to develop my ideas." He also enjoys that he can study something that he is passionate about. He says, "Many people choose a career because it will pay good money. I am happy that I found something that I love to do every day as well."
One of his proudest moments was during the last semester of his senior year of undergrad. He and his partner completed their final project for the semester and received an award for being the most creative. "That was one of the best things that has happened to me in Kent," he says about winning the award.
Outside of school work, Yunyao likes to play the guitar. He started seven years ago and tries to play as often as he can. He also enjoys hanging out with friends and going to the gym.
When Yunyao graduates he hopes to get a job with an architecture firm in a larger U.S. city like Chicago or San Francisco. His dream job would be to work with Zaha Hadid, a U.K. based architecture company with modern 21st century designs. After a few years working in the U.S. or U.K., he would like to move back to China where there are more opportunities for architects.
We Want to Hear from YOU!
