International Women’s Day

March 8th, 2022

“Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow.”

This week, people around the globe will pause to honor the political and cultural accomplishments of women, and to raise awareness of the importance of women’s equality.

In 1975, during International Women's Year, the United Nations designated March 8th as International Women's Day. Today, International Women’s Day is recognized and celebrated in more than 80 countries.

The 2022 UN International Women’s Day theme is “gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”, recognizing that women bear a disproportionate burden of the impacts of the climate crisis, and that they need to play a large role in the central solutions for a sustainable planet.

“On International Women’s Day, we celebrate women and girls everywhere. We celebrate their contributions to ending the COVID-19 pandemic. Their ideas, innovations and activism that are changing our world for the better. And their leadership across all walks of life. But we also recognize that in too many areas, the clock on women’s rights is moving backwards. …

And as this year’s theme reminds us, they bear the brunt of climate change and environmental degradation. Starting now, on International Women’s Day, it’s time to turn the clock forward for every woman and girl.” -UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Monday, March 7, 2022

On March 8th, 2022, UN International Women’s Day,

Pathways To Peace (PTP) is launching “Exceptional Woman of Peace” –

an awards program that recognizes and honors the exceptional leadership of Women of all ages in their quest for Peace.

The Program will give out two awards - one for an Exceptional Woman of Peace and one for an Exceptional Young Woman of Peace. We will be highlighting ten extraordinary women of distinction, five in each category, and will be announcing the two award recipients in an Award Ceremony in conjunction with the anniversary of the UN Resolution for a Culture of Peace and Programme of Action, on September 12th. The two finalists will receive a trophy and a $300 cash prize.

As Project Lead Kimberly Weichel explains, "This award honors the inspiring work of women peacebuilders whose courage, leadership, and commitment to Peace stand out as beacons of strength and hope."

In the spirit of our recently passed Co-Founder, Avon Mattison, PTP recognizes the important leadership of women and girls in creating a diverse, inclusive, and sustainable culture of Peace. And while we wish to celebrate those among us that have exceeded all expectations in their quest for Peace, we also recognize all women as Peacebuilders.
