Interview with Naturalist Reno Sommerhalder: Protecting Kamchatka's Bears

We continue our series of interviews highlighting Kamchatka, Russia. Today we are interviewing Reno Sommerhalder, an internationally recognized bear naturalist, conservationist, wildlife guide and photographer who has traveled to Kamchatka since 2003 to study Kamchatka brown bears.

Tell our readers a little bit about yourself. When and how did you discover your passion for bears?

I was fresh off the boat, so to speak, when I had a first very close encounter with a bear in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, where I make my home today. This story took place more then 32 years ago. During the day I would hike around with a small cowbell attached to my pack. At night that same bell became my doorbell, hanging from the ceiling of my little tent. The ringing of this bell woke me one night and as I sat up I starred into the face of a bear who had torn open the side of my little abode. We stared at one another, likely both in shock, for no more then 2 seconds until he fortunately pulled out his head and shuffled off. This encounter left me wondering about these animals and instead of being scared-off, I was intrigued about them from that moment onwards.

AirRussia.US Statement on COVID-19

InterPacific Aviation and Marketing, Inc.(IPAM)/AirRussia.US would like to provide an update to its customers regarding Yakutia Airlines' 2020 Summer Alaska-Russian Far East air service given the current uncertainty surrounding the evolving coronavirus (COVID-19) situation. At present, the carrier is planning to operate the service as scheduled, weekly on Mondays, July 13-September 14, 2020. There has been no change to operational plans, and tickets remain on sale through established outlets. We acknowledge the seriousness of the current situation, but are hopeful that by summer circumstances will improve. We will continue to monitor the situation closely for anything that may impact travel and we will provide updates to travelers on our website and via this newsletter. Do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

In an effort to address concerns of passengers attempting to plan summer travel during this uncertain period, IPAM/AirRussia.US is waiving cancellation and change fees on new tickets purchased between March 24, 2020 and May 15, 2020. This applies to tickets on Yakutia Airlines' Alaska-Russian Far East Service purchased through IPAM/AirRussia.US, ProTravel International (Beverly Hills Office), and Red Star Travel (Seattle). The waiver does not apply to promotional tickets booked in fare classes V and R, and there have been no changes to cancellation and change fees on any tickets issued before March 24, 2020. Should the service ultimately be cancelled for any reason, all tickets purchased for the 2020 Alaska-Russian Far East Service, regardless of booking class, will be refunded through their respective points of sale.
