Give Big Kern Mascot Billy the Give Big Goat has donned a visor and sleeve protectors like the newspaper publishers of old to introduce Billy's Give B-i-i-i-g! Gazette, a quarterly e-newsletter to help our nonprofit partners improve their online fundraising skills in e-mail marketing; social media; the use of new technologies in effective promotions and storytelling; board member, donor and volunteer engagement; data management; "and m-o-o-o-r-e!"
This effort is part of Give Big Kern Host Agency Kern Community Foundation's Nonprofit Strengthening Initiative. Our first issue, in Billy's words, is all about "Rethinking and R-e-t-o-o-o-l-i-n-g" as nonprofits pivot more and more toward 100% online fundraising in response to the COVID-19 crisis.

Featured Article - Capitalizing on New Trends in Online Fundraising: Insights from Charlie Mulligan, CEO of GiveGab, which powers GiveBigKern.org.

At this year's GiveGab Giving Day Virtual Leaders Forum in late July, GiveGab CEO and Co-Founder Charlie Mulligan, who last visited Give Big Kern Nonprofits in 2019, shared some of the surprising (and hopeful) trends he has witnessed in online engagement since the start of the COVID crisis:

Work has changed: By some estimates, 25-30% of the workforce will be working from home multiple days a week by the end of 2021.
-
Shopping has changed: Nearly 80% of U.S. consumers have shopped online for groceries since the COVID-19 outbreak.
-
Expectations have changed: Convenience (more than price, and even fear!) is the No. 1 reason consumers shop online.
-
Seniors' online habits have changed: Home-bound, many people 65 and older have expanded their tech literacy and use of the internet. This is their new normal -- and they are adapting!

Giving has changed: Considering a scenario where U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is likely to contract by 7% this year, GiveGab expects offline donations nationwide could be down by more than $99 billion from $412 billion in 2019 to $313 billion in 2020, but anticipates online donations could grow by close to $68 billion from $38 billion in 2019 to $106 billion in 2020.
What does this mean for Give Big Kern?
Nonprofits should adapt to new technology trends, learn new tech skills and enhance donors' giving experience by integrating more video and live streaming into their Giving Day outreach efforts--including social media, peer-to-peer (P2P) fundraising, matching gift strategies, support area fundraisers--as well and their post-Giving Day donor and volunteer satisfaction and retention endeavors--personalized and engaging "Thank You!" e-mail notifications and periodic follow ups, invitations to donate or volunteer on other projects or events besides Give Big Kern.
"Don't be good, be great!" Charlie says, reminding our nonprofit partners that, "What we all do matters more than ever."

It is the first ever community calendar just for nonprofits in Kern County!
Use the link above to check out the event postings of some of our nonprofit partners, and if you would like to do the same for your agency, please contact Louis Medina at [email protected] for instructions on how to create a login account.
NOTE: This is a FREE service limited to agencies that are registered with Kern Community Foundation and have a Silver or higher transparency rating on GuideStar.org. All events will be vetted and posted at the discretion of Kern Community Foundation.
Allowable postings include: Nonprofit fundraisers, Trainings/Webinars, Networking events and mixers (whether virtual or live, when allowed); Special events hosted by a nonprofit (art openings, concerts, outings, etc., whether virtual or live, when allowed).
Postings not allowed include: Events outside of Kern County; Commercial events; Political events; For-profit business seminars; Events hosted by individuals; Events with limited or no contact information; Events that may be considered offensive; Religious services.
