Discovering 'Clotilda' Slave Ship In June, community members convened at the Tuskegee History Center for a local discussion about the discovery of the last transatlantic slave ship to America. Researchers recently confirmed remains of the 'Clotilda' (photo courtesy of National Geographic) were found in Alabama's Mobile waters. Stay tuned for a future program at the Center with representatives from the Alabama Historical Commission recounting details of the discovery. Community Partnership Plan Outlined by New Tuskegee University President Lily McNair The Tuskegee Area Chamber of Commerce recently welcomed Tuskegee University’s 8th University President, Dr. Lily D. McNair, to their Eggs & Issues Breakfast. Mayor Tony Haygood introduced her before the chamber with remarks about her historic position at the university as Tuskegee’s first permanent female president and expressed his eagerness of looking forward “to her leadership and a new era of greatness at Tuskegee University”. >> Read More Community Gardening at George Washington Carver Elementary School The Tuskegee History Center dispatched volunteers to help Principal Norman Williams and kindergarten students at George Washington Carver Elementary School for a fun-filled 'We Care' gardening event. Thanks to funding from the State of Alabama as part of the state’s bicentennial celebration, students are able to build a community garden. “Because we care about our community, we are building this garden together," educator Ms. Debra Vann explained. >> Read More

President's Note Our hearts were saddened to hear of the recent loss of Dr. William (Bill) Carter Jenkins, whom we first met in the 1990's as the federal government was beginning to address the wrongs done to the men and families of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study. Summertime Reflections: STEM Aviation History Camp Around this time last year, students were assembling paper airplanes and exploring the aviation industry at the Tuskegee History Center during a summer youth STEM aviation day camp. Focused on ‘The Tuskegee Airmen: Keeping Their History Alive,’ the camp included museum visits and programs on the Tuskegee Airmen, model display airplanes, and career exploration. Tuskegee native Frank Hatten presented Boeing's DreamLearners program and Tuskegeean Garry Quinn exposed students to careers in transportation.
