Introducing Author/Illustrator Lili Chin!

Please join us in welcoming Lili Chin to our Full Circle Literary family!

While many of us are stuck at home with our beloved pets, Lili just launched her timely, spectacular debut book: DOGGIE LANGUAGE: A Dog Lover's Guide To Understanding Your Best Friend from Summersdale.

Now it's time to shout about her from the rooftops.

Lili's life has taken her all over the world. She was born in Malaysia, leaving at 12 to go to Australia (alone!) where she lived, studied, and worked for 20 years before moving to the United States to make her mark on Hollywood. Lili's artistic career began in animation. In 1999, she developed the hit show Mucha Lucha, a popular animated Warner Brothers series about luchadores that actually pioneered the use of Flash animation on television! The show's commitment to authenticity led to a nomination for an Imagen Award, which is dedicated to encouraging and recognizing the positive portrayals of Latinos in the entertainment industry.

Today, Lili is perhaps best known for her delightful animal illustrations, which always have a story to tell. She uses art to help us better understand the animals around us. A passionate animal advocate, she has studied animal behavior courses, lending an authenticity and insight to her work as the collaborator of choice for humane dog trainers and behaviorists worldwide. She has become a go-to for memorable animal art with personality, and her work has been featured in Scientific American and even on a campaign for the World Health Organization!

You will likely recognize her Doggie Drawings from stationery, puzzles, calendars, housewares ore more, not to mention her global hit DOGS OF THE WORLD poster.

Lili is fascinated by the aesthetics of mostly vintage subcultures, which inspires her art in a variety of directions.

Her interest in a manga series led her to the world of yokai, the supernatural monsters, spirits and demons of Japanese folklore. Her Yokai Parade work has appeared at Emerald City Comic-Con, the Japanese American National Museum and  was recently part of an exhibit at AG Gallery in Brooklyn She is currently working on a project inspired by 1920's Shanghai Deco.

Research and understanding are a foundational step of Lili's artistic process. She begins by reading as much as she can and researching imagery, watching videos and more, before sketching. Sketches may be pencil on paper or digital, but, as she says, "Most of the work happens before I put pen to paper (or tablet!)". Her 15+ years as a digital illustrator and animator show in her ability to say what she wants to through simplicity. Her digital artwork often features flat, colorful shapes or clean black and white lifework with movement and personality, in characters that "speak" to our eyes in just a glance.

In her personal time, Lili enjoys reading, playing a growing collection of boardgames, cooking (fun fact: her ice cream recipe blog was featured on Kitchn and Saveur!), and Boogie, her rescued senior blue-eyed Boston terrier and inspiration for much of her work. The last year has been one of her busiest; after living in the United States for 15 years, she became a citizen a year ago, and got married just weeks ago to her longtime partner.
Lili is interested in illustrating books that challenge her to make complex concepts interesting and accessible. She loves to be a part of science-based projects that aim to portray animals as the intelligent, sentient, social individuals they are.

Given her experiences as someone who identifies as Malaysian-Chinese and American, has lived on three different continents and excels at bringing lesser-known subjects to large audiences, she would be a great fit for a wide range of projects. She is particularly interested in those that touch on different cultures and lifestyles, food, and relationships. She is also very interested in contributing to projects about wellness and health, folklore, and social justice.

Her publishers will tell you that Lili is a sheer joy to work with. She is very interested in doing book covers, spot illustration projects, adult nonfiction and gift titles. We look forward to working with you as we bring Lili's work to more readers in the years ahead.
