3rd Street Makes the Jump to College Programming

3rd Street Youth Center & Clinic has launched a new program, CollegeJump, an advanced college preparatory and counseling program for the youth in Bayview Hunters Point.

CollegeJump Helps Students:

•Cultivate career paths

•Research and apply to colleges

•Successfully file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

•Apply for scholarships and understand the impact on financial aid

•Research college SAT/ACT requirements

•Offer insight and guidance on in-state vs. out-of-state tuition

•Help weigh the pros and cons of community college vs. university

It’s no secret that education is one of the keys to success in today’s world. Unfortunately, a large percentage of students are unable to attend college due to a lack of financial and educational resources. For many BVHP youth, it’s the first time their family has gone through the college application process, not always easy to navigate. The rising cost of college tuition, application fees, standardized test fees, and books also act as barriers for many young people applying to college.

We're constantly inspired by the academic drive and promise our community youths show and want to make sure we’re helping them reach their full potential. We don’t think financial constraints or lack of educational resources should continue to be a barrier to a brighter future for students in the area. CollegeJump is an important jumpstart for young people. We’re humbly asking you to join us in our efforts to raise $25,000. This bold goal requires a huge community effort. We truly cannot do it without your help.

What will your donation go toward?

• $500 provides 2.5 hours of college advising for one student.
• $250 covers the cost of up to three college applications.
• $100 enables us to buy student snacks for a College Prep workshop.
• $50 helps us purchase school supplies for one student.
• $25 covers transportation for one student to tour a local college campus.

3rd Street's Youth Development Specialist, Ashia Coleman, will lead this new program. By providing students with the opportunity to apply and attend universities, Ashia is helping them take a giant step towards building a fulfilling future. Without a four-year degree, it’s almost impossible to land a desirable, meaningful career with a competitive salary. College provides students not only a strong education and set up for their future, but it also allows students to develop connections and unmatched opportunities for growth. These formative years are critical in helping young people discover their interests, create valuable, lasting relationships, land internships, and most importantly really get to know themselves and be exposed to experiences that they otherwise would not have been aware of.
