I'm excited to announce the launch of the new IDSS podcast, Data Nation. In each episode, IDSS faculty and industry experts explore data-driven solutions to many challenges our society faces: systemic racism, data privacy, misinformation, etc. You can listen on the IDSS website or any major podcast streaming platform.

I'm also proud to share stories on how IDSS is involved in the MIT Climate Grand Challenges, and a well-deserved shoutout to IDSS students who went above and beyond as TAs.

If you or someone you know might be interested in getting a graduate degree involving computation, I encourage you to join the Schwarzman College of Computing's upcoming academic program showcase — details below!

In Data Nation, produced in collaboration with Voxtopica, IDSS faculty and industry experts discuss many challenges facing our society, taking a data-driven approach to analyzing complex systems.

Each episode unpacks a different example of how data can be used to lead, mislead, manipulate, and inform the public’s viewpoints and decisions.

Episodes drop Thursdays. Here's what's out so far:

Climate Grand Challenges
Many in the IDSS community are working on climate-related issues. Some are working directly on one of MIT's Climate Grand Challenges, an institute-wide effort to mobilize research on difficult challenges like decarbonization, reducing emissions, and climate policy.
This flagship project co-led by Noelle Selin will build climate models that are more accurate, more nimble, and easier for governments, industries, and communities to use.
Jessika Trancik is a member of the Climate Grand Challenges team "focusing on the science of extreme weather and engineering social solutions to decarbonization in one integrated project."
Awards and Fellowships
Each year, IDSS selects postdoctoral fellows and students in the doctoral program in Social & Engineering Systems (SES) to join the Michael Hammer Society of Fellows. Learn more about the fellowship and the fellows.
The first IDSS TA awards were given to SES students Max Vilgalys and Yunzong Xu in recognition of their excellent instruction and commitment to students.
Join us Monday, October 17 at 12pm EST to learn more about graduate programs within the MIT Schwarzman College of Computing — including IDSS programs like SES, TPP, and the interdisciplinary Statistics PhD.
With recorded lectures by MIT faculty and personalized mentorship from industry practitioners, this 12-week program covers statistics and Python foundations, machine learning, deep learning, NLP, prediction, recommendation systems, and more. The program is in collaboration with Great Learning, an online education provider and IDSS Alliance member.
Uncover data’s true value and make data-driven business decisions with MIT faculty and mentorship from industry practitioners.
