Please join us to warmly welcome our newest illustrator to the Full Circle Literary family and to the children's books community!
Christine Almeda debuts as the illustrator of the awesome
Sarai chapter book series written by award-winning author Monica Brown and social activist and viral "Soy Yo" music video star Sarai Gonzalez!
Here are a few samples and see more on
Scholastic's Sarai series website:
In the new series, Christine captures multiple dynamic characters, humor, and fun-filled
action in her illustrations of a multigenerational family and a vibrant community.
With more than 100 black-and-white illustrations in each book, every page is filled with
"You Are Awesome"
energy.
The
Sarai books celebrate girl power, Latinx family pride, sisterhood, goal-setting, teamwork, supporting talents, and most of all dreaming BIG. Christine is proud to launch her career in children's books as illustrator of this series by co-authors
Sarai Gonzalez and Monica Brown.
As a Woman of Color illustrator, Christine would love to continue to work on projects that empower young readers to take pride in their heritage, their community, and themselves!
Christine identifies as both Filipino and American. She grew up on the east coast as part of a warm and vibrant community of Filipino people from different backgrounds and families. As immigrants, her family and neighbors brought parts of their home country - the food, expertise, heritage -- to the United States, and joined together as they lay down roots in a whole new country. H
er grandmother's stories of growing up as a farm girl in the Philippines and her visits to her home country influence her artwork. As an artist and illustrator, Christine would love to bring more visibility to the beautiful Filipino culture.
As a second generation immigrant, Christine finds inspiration from her family's heritage and hard work. She believes in the power of storytelling and heartfelt creation, and hopes to bring more visibility to characters of color in her work.
Christine also finds inspiration in Ghibli movies, Golden Age Illustrators, old photographs, music, animation, and classic picture books she read growing up. She enjoys nature, animals, spending time with family, sharing a good meal, and the small moments of day-to-day life. In her character design, she works sketch by sketch in multimedia to develop each character for illustration and animation. Christine
has worked on character design for Scholastic, American Girl, Macmillan, Light Grey Art Lab, and GIPHY Studios.
Christine is currently open to chapter books, middle grade, and graphic novel illustration projects. She'd love to find just the right picture book project to illustrate next. In the meantime, she is working on a picture book she both writes and illustrates set in the Philippines inspired by her mother and grandmother.
