Kate's Corner

Welcome to RCPD Watch, the inaugural edition of the Rancho Cordova Police Department (RCPD)'s Neighborhood Watch newsletter. As the city continues to grow, RCPD wants to highlight the contributions of our Neighborhood Watch community leaders and update you about important topics.

Neighborhood Watch is a program of neighbors watching out for each other during the workday, evenings, vacations, or even during times when our neighbors are home. By working together, we can make our neighborhoods the sanctuary of peace they were meant to be.

In each issue, we will highlight a Rancho Cordova Neighborhood Watch  Captain, Co-Captain or community member  and their contributions to the community. As our partners in deterring and detecting criminal activity, RCPD thanks each and every member of Neighborhood Watch in Rancho Cordova.

Meet Bob Cashatt
Cordova Meadows Neighborhood Watch Captain

Bob (pictured right) and Meada Cashatt have lived in Rancho Cordova since November of 1971. Before Rancho Cordova became a city, Bob remembers their street was a speedway with frequent car crashes, and one vehicle even crashed into their home. He also remembers a stolen car being burned, drug deals, gang graffiti, and other disturbances happening in the neighborhood.

Soon after the city was incorporated in 2003, Bob contacted Council Member David Sander and organized a neighborhood meeting. Together, they partnered on crime prevention strategies and eventually blocked off Dedo Way in the Cordova Meadows neighborhood to cars. Dedo Way is an important entrance to the American River Parkway, and today is enjoyed by dozens of neighbors as well as people outside of our community. This was a huge improvement for Bob and his neighbors!

In 2007, Bob contacted the Rancho Cordova Police Department to build relationships.  He arranged for a Neighborhood Watch coordinator, a police officer and interested neighbors to meet at his home, and they formed a loose neighborhood watch group.  At the time, the group shared community information using Yahoo Groups. When Nextdoor came along, Bob formed Nextdoor Cordova Meadows. He feels Nextdoor allows for a broader exchange of information and covers a larger cross section of neighbors.

In an effort to increase community awareness, Bob and his wife graciously host National Night Out events, usually at their home. On these occasions, they have been able to meet and get acquainted with neighbors and RCPD officers. Bob feels these events have only been successful with the help of his wife as well as Nextdoor co-lead Mary Nesel.

Bob's willingness to work with RCPD on neighborhood priorities is greatly appreciated. RCPD thanks Bob, Meada and all Cordova Meadows residents for tirelessly creating a cohesive relationship between the City of Rancho Cordova, RCPD and their neighborhood!
