Guide to Lost or Misplaced Firearms

The unfortunate reality is that firearms are lost or stolen with alarming frequency. The impact of such incidents can be devastating, contributing to crime and endangering lives. If you find yourself in this situation, here's what you need to do:

  • Retrace Your Steps: The first step is to try to jog your memory. Think back to where you last had your firearm and carefully retrace your steps. Check any locations you visited recently.
  • Thorough Search: Conduct a meticulous search of your home, vehicle, workplace, and any other places you frequent. Sometimes, firearms can end up in unexpected places.
  • Report to Law Enforcement: If your search proves fruitless, it's crucial to report the loss or theft to your local law enforcement agency. Provide them with all the necessary details about your firearm, including the make, model, and serial number.
  • Contact Your Insurance: If you have firearm insurance, inform your insurance provider about the loss as soon as possible.
  • Consider Gun Leash: To prevent future incidents, consider investing in Gun Leash. Our proximity alert system provides an extra layer of security, notifying you instantly if you become separated from your firearm.

Remember, responsible gun ownership includes taking steps to prevent loss and theft. Stay vigilant and prioritize safety!

The Importance of Gun Safety: Insights from a Police Chief

In a candid conversation with Gun Leash founder Carl Lanore, retired Police Chief Deanna Cantrell emphasizes the critical importance of gun safety and responsible gun ownership. Chief Cantrell, with nearly 30 years of experience in law enforcement, highlights the often-underreported reality of lost and stolen firearms. She shares a personal story of misplacing her own firearm, underscoring that even seasoned professionals can experience lapses in vigilance.

“Lots of people lose guns. It's just they don't talk about it. That's the difference. That's the truth. And I can tell you a lot of people that have, even my own staff, have lost their guns, but I would never, uh, disclose or talk about it. It's, it's, you know, it's done and over with for them. Uh, but it does happen a lot, a lot more than people realize.” - Chief Cantrell

Chief Cantrell stresses that the fear and embarrassment associated with losing a firearm often lead to underreporting, hindering efforts to address this critical issue. She advocates for open conversations and proactive solutions like Gun Leash to promote responsible gun ownership and prevent firearms from falling into the wrong hands.

Gun Thefts from Cars Triple in a Decade, Report Reveals

The rate of guns stolen from cars in the U.S. has tripled in the past ten years, surpassing homes as the primary source of stolen firearms, according to an analysis of FBI data by the gun safety group Everytown.

What Happened: The report, which examined FBI data from 337 cities across 44 states, reveals a steady increase in gun thefts from vehicles, with a significant spike during the pandemic coinciding with a surge in gun purchases. The stolen firearms have been linked to violent crimes and tragic accidents, highlighting the urgent need for responsible gun storage.

Why it Matters: The alarming rise in gun thefts from cars poses a serious threat to public safety. Stolen guns often end up in the hands of criminals who cannot legally purchase firearms, fueling violence and endangering communities. The trend underscores the importance of securing firearms properly, even when left in vehicles, to prevent them from being used in crimes or accidents.

Concealed Carry Applications Surge in NYC and NJ Following Supreme Court Ruling

Applications for concealed carry permits have skyrocketed in New York City and New Jersey following the 2022 U.S. Supreme Court decision that eased restrictions on carrying firearms in public.

What Happened:

In New York City, the number of concealed carry permit applications soared to over 11,000 between 2022 and early March 2024, a stark contrast to the mere 315 applications received in 2021. Similarly, New Jersey saw around 41,000 new applications and hundreds of renewal requests between 2022 and June 2024, with an approval rate exceeding 99%. This surge follows the Supreme Court ruling that prompted both states to revise their permitting laws, making it easier to obtain carry permits.

Why it Matters:

The sharp increase in applications underscores the critical need for responsible gun ownership and firearm safety measures. The increased accessibility of concealed carry permits highlights the importance of solutions like Gun Leash, which can help prevent firearm loss, theft, and misuse, ultimately contributing to safer communities. The ongoing legal challenges and data collection efforts surrounding gun control policies emphasize the complex nature of this issue and the need for innovative solutions to promote responsible gun ownership and reduce gun violence.
