Dear Valued Member,

Welcome to The Dark Side Series – Cybercrime Threats Exposed

The Winnipeg Regional Real Estate Board is vested in ensuring our Members receive professional development that enhances their knowledge and understanding on matters of importance.

Throughout 2023, expect to receive a new series of emails entitled The Dark Side Series – Cybercrime Threats Exposed. The Dark Side Series has been created to keep cybersecurity top of mind and equip you, our valued Member, with important information on cyber scams and cybercrime threats.

Did you know that many cyberattacks over the past year have been indicative of broader trends and that these trends will persist into 2023? While there are plenty of unknowns, one thing isn’t in doubt – cybersecurity will be more important than ever.

Here are four trends to expect in 2023:

It’s clear that remote and hybrid work are now permanent features for many workplaces and occupations. Issues such as using unsecured WiFi without a VPN, leaving work devices unlocked in public places, and clicking on malicious emails continue to inflict damages totaling over 10 trillion globally in 2021 and making it the world’s third-largest economy after the U.S. and China.

As the number of connected devices surge, cybercriminals will have a huge number of new entry points. For example, cloud-based productivity tools are now under major attack.

The supply chain sector is in the middle of a comprehensive digital transformation, which means companies are in the early stages of deploying digital resources. Many cybercriminals view this as an opportunity to exploit digital systems that are still being set up.

The 2022 Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report found that 82 percent of breaches over the preceding year involved social engineering. This finding has been remarkably consistent over the years, and it’s unlikely to change any time soon.

Watch your email inbox for monthly updates from The Dark Side Series, where we expose cybercrime threats to you. When you are aware of cybercrime trends, you will be in a stronger position to protect yourself.
