amplifyHERscience
Tuesday Touch-Base
amplifyHERscience, initiated in 2020 by Yale OCR, aims to promote awareness among women faculty about opportunities to extend the impact of their scientific research into the real world.

Founded by three women within the Office of Cooperative Research who feel passionately about female representation, we want to empower Yale female faculty to engage in translational research and development and further advance the basic science discoveries, with the goal to:

  • Pursue potential real-life applications of research
  • De-risk early-stage technologies
  • Achieve an inflection point to attract external partners for further research and development and commercialization

We know, however, we cannot make strides alone. The more support and engagement we can muster, the better. We are not only open to expanding this network, but also to hearing your experiences and ideas. If you have not already subscribed to our twice-monthly informational e-blast, we hope you'll join us.
Upcoming Events
Thursday, January 14; Thursday, January 28th
Sci-Founder Fellowship Information Sessions
5:00 pm PT

Here’s how Sci-Founder describes their program:
Sci-Founder Fellowship ($400K) is a program to help early career scientists start companies of their own. We believe that companies can often be the best way to pursue translational research, and not enough scientists consider this as a serious path to bringing their research into the world.

Unlike some fellowship programs, this program is meant to be taken very seriously -- it is meant for scientist founders that would be willing to spend a significant portion of their careers on their companies if they are successful.

Teams encouraged, but solo founders ok too -- at least one person on a team must be full time. We will fund you and help you raise additional funding when needed. Please sign up for an info session to learn more.

Osage University Partners 5 Part Webinar Series
Startup Licensing 101: A Resource for Entrepreneurs Working with Companies Originated at Academic Institutions
12:00pm ET

For many entrepreneurs, licensing from a university may be a new experience. This series of webinars provides information that will be helpful for academic entrepreneurs contemplating their first (or perhaps subsequent) license from an academic institution. Presented by an attorney who represents many academic startups, including their investors, along with two academic technology transfer veterans, these webinars bring views from both sides of the table and best practices for a fruitful and efficient negotiation.

Panelists:
  • Lisa Norton, Associate Director, Innovation Development, University of Washington CoMotion
  • Rick Friedman, CEO and Founder, NovusGC, Professional Law Corporation
  • Nakisha Holder, Associate Portfolio Director, Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures

In part one of this 5-part webinar series, the panelists will cover the background of the licensing agreement. This will bring important context to all of the subsequent webinars.
  • What is technology transfer?
  • Why do universities and companies enter into these agreements?
  • Who are the key stakeholders on each side?
  • What do the stakeholders expect of the negotiation and license?

Subsequent parts of the series are:
  • The Overall License Process and Pre-License Agreements – (March 23rd, noon ET)
  • The Term Sheet; Financials of a License – (May 2021; exact date TBD)
  • The License, Part 1 - License Primer; Reservation of Rights; Sublicensing; Change of Control; Reporting; Termination – July (exact date TBD)
  • The License, Part 2 - The “Lawyer” Parts - Indemnities, Warranties, Liabilities; All Things Patents; Ownership; Name Use – September (exact date TBD)

Note that the license part of the series will only cover certain areas of the license agreement. These are areas often most discussed during negotiations, particularly with those unfamiliar with university license agreements.
