July 10, 2025

Hello Rick and Maria,

And just like that, the second annual International Day of Zentangle (IDOZ) is right around the corner! But that is not all that is happening at ZHQ... there is quite a lot to keep you busy as we savor the summer months. In this newsletter you will find:

  • A new tangle - coofia
  • coofia-Inspired Journal Prompt
  • A reminder to join us for IDOZ on July 15th
  • A reminder to get ready for Project Pack No. 27
  • And more!

Enjoy!

coofia

We are excited to introduce a new chain-like tangle - coofia. The tangle coofia was inspired by an adoring name given to Julie's baby prior to her official naming. Congratulations, Julie!

Journal Prompt - June

Julie writes:

Coofia is the name that my son gave his baby sister while I was pregnant with her. When we found out I was having a girl, he suggested we name her Coofia and for the next 20 weeks, the name stuck. Back in March, Coofia made her arrival, and now we call her Millie, but the tangle is a sweet reminder of those months of getting to know her before anyone else.

Since her arrival, there has not been a lot of time for tangling. There are moments when I miss putting pen to paper and getting lost in the lines. One night, in the wee hours of the night, I recalled that some tanglers will tangle in their heads to help calm their mind when pen and paper are not an option. I gave it a shot.

For this journal prompt, I suggest you set aside your journal and pen for a moment. When you have the chance, close your eyes and mentally go through the 8 Steps of the Zentangle Method, just as you would on paper.

If coofia is brand new to you, study the step out for a little while and then close your eyes and do it in your head first. Then, bring pen to paper and explore this new tangle on a tile or in your journal.

In your journal, reflect on how tangling in your mind made you feel, how it was different, and how it was the same as tangling on paper. How did visualizing the tangle first help you learn the strokes?

Keep the 8 Steps of the Zentangle Method close to you for whenever you need it with the NEW 8 Steps Keepsake Card. It is perfect for on your desk, in your wallet, tucked inside your favorite book, or on your bedside table for the wee hours of the night.

Zentangle Project Pack No. 27 - Get Ready!

Driven by the forces of love, the fragments of the world seek each other so that the world may come to being.

-Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

All patterns are created using a system of creating a design or image component and then repeating it in some sort of way to create a new image. The Zentangle Method studies types of patterns and breaks them down into simple steps that can be hand drawn. We call these patterns "tangles". Within our world of tangles, we often separate them into categories. One of the more traditional categories that gets lots of attention is grid tangles. There are all sorts of grid tangles, and we often use them in very untraditional ways.

In this project pack, we dive into the world of grid tangles and take a closer look at the system we use within the Zentangle Method to create them. Join us as we put our Zentomological caps on, to collect and investigate grid tangles using a very special custom item made for this tangled mission.

Videos for Zentangle Project Pack No. 27 will be released via our website and newsletter every other day beginning August 8th, 2025.

Remember, part of the fun of the Zentangle Project Pack Series is the element of surprise. Please refrain from sharing or posting photos of the contents prior to the release of the videos. Thank you!
