Public health professionals from around the state gathered at the Sheraton Hotel to kick off the 11th Annual Healthy Mississippi Conference, hosted by the Mississippi State Department of Health in conjunction with the Mississippi Health Disparities Planning Committee.

Mississippi River-caught fish contain toxic metals of human health concern, MS-INBRE research reveals
May 28, 2025
Drs. Scoty Hearst and Trent Selby, professors at Mississippi College in Clinton, Mississippi, are analyzing fish caught out of the Lower Mississippi River Basin to determine the level of toxic metals that accumulate in their flesh as part of a study funded by Mississippi INBRE. Their results, published in a recent issue of Elsevier, indicated that some fish species, such as gar, contained levels of toxic metals exceeding safe consumption limits outlined by the World Health Organization, including lead and mercury.

Mississippi Research Consortium Launches Shared Resources Agreement to Boost Statewide Scientific Collaboration
June 2025
On May 19, 2025, four of Mississippi’s leading research universities—Jackson State University, Mississippi State University, the University of Mississippi, and the University of Southern Mississippi—signed a groundbreaking Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) establishing reciprocal access to high-value scientific equipment and core facilities.

Jurgenson publishes research paper in prestigious chemistry journal
June 16, 2025
Mississippi INBRE-funded researcher Dr. Christopher Jurgenson, Sullivan-Outlaw associate professor of biochemistry at Delta State University recently published a collaborative research paper in the Journal of Chemical Education. The paper, titled “Combining Predicted, Calculated, and Hands-On NMR Spectra to Enhance Instruction of Molecular Structure in Organic Chemistry,” will appear in the journal’s July 2025 edition and includes contributions from Dr. Larry Collins of Longwood University.

To strengthen innovation and research across the state, Mississippi has launched the Mississippi Emerging Research Institutions Council (MERIC). This new initiative brings together colleges and universities that are committed to research excellence but face unique challenges in gaining recognition, acquiring funding, and building infrastructure.

Record-breaking Mississippi research conference highlights urgent need for sustained research funding
April 17, 2025
Despite concerns over research funding cuts at higher education institutions nationwide, the 2025 Eighty-Ninth Annual Meeting of the Mississippi Academy of Sciences (MAS) proved in-state scientific research remains strong. The conference, held March 20–21 at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Convention Center in Biloxi, attracted more than 1,400 faculty, staff, students and industry professionals, marking a record-breaking turnout and reinforcing both the state’s commitment to scientific discovery and the importance of sustained investment in research.

Ethan Wilkins, of Vernon, Alabama, a junior biology major at Mississippi University for Women, will spend his summer with a lab coat thanks to a $6,500 scholarship from the Mississippi IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE).

Alcorn graduate student wins top science award for yeast research
May 23, 2025
A first-year graduate student from Houston, Tex. won the top poster award at a major science meeting in Mississippi.
Ismael Mayo, who studies biology, received the Best Poster Presentation Award at the Mississippi Academy of Science Annual Meeting. He won in the Agriculture and Plant Sciences division.

New research finds Mississippi River losing most of its sediment before reaching Gulf

Tulane University researchers are spending days at a time on the Lower Mississippi River collecting water samples by boat to better understand water and sediment flow in the region known as the Bird’s Foot Delta, the southernmost tip of the river that juts out into the Gulf.

The Jackson Heart Study: How a landmark research project can inspire story ideas
April 15, 2025
In the late 1990s, researchers launched the nation’s largest study focused on understanding the causes of heart disease among African Americans.
The Jackson Heart Study, which includes 5,300 participants from the Jackson, Mississippi, area, has led to key discoveries, such as specific gene variants that may double a person’s risk of developing heart disease.
