February 2022 Edition

Hello Friends,

The RTMC Team has been super busy this month serving our neighbors in need and gearing up for a jam-packed spring. We’ve recently completed critical home repairs for our 86th family this fiscal year and we are on pace to hit our goal to serve 150 vulnerable families by June 30th. We are also preparing and planning for several wonderful events and invite you to join us. Please mark your calendars:

National Rebuilding Day is April 29/30 and May 1, and we’ll have 27 corporate and faith-based groups fan out across the county to help 25 families in need.

She Builds with ABC Metro Washington is June 10th, and the Women Building Washington committee members will be out in force to support the families served at Stepping Stones Shelter in Rockville.

Cheers to Volunteers, a fun-filled BBQ event to celebrate our volunteers and partners, will take place on June 2 at Smokey Glen Farm in Gaithersburg.

RTMC Annual Golf Tournament planning is in full swing for our October 3 tournament at Bretton Woods Golf Course in Germantown. All funds raised will help provide critical home repairs for our clients.

As always, we are so grateful to you for your steadfast support of our mission. Together, we are helping to preserve affordable housing and making a tangible difference for our neighbors in need.

All the best,

Thank you SERVPRO of Rockville-Olney & Silver Spring North!

Recently, RTMC was contacted by a homeowner who had a serious hazmat situation in their home, and our partners at SERVPRO stepped in to help ensure that this homeowner would continue to be safe and healthy in their home. They donated cleaning services that will be life-changing for this homeowner. We are grateful for the professionalism and compassion shown by the entire SERVPRO team!

Welcoming Brent Kynoch

Please help us give a warm welcome to Brent Kynoch, who recently joined the Board of Directors at Rebuilding Together Montgomery County.

Brent comes to RTMC with more than 30 years of experience in the field of environmental issues identification and remediation. Brent’s background in the HVAC, building, and mechanical contracting industries led to his concern and involvement in the environmental industry, and he is the Founder and President of Kynoch Environmental Management, a firm specializing in preventative environmental management. Brent is also the CEO of Clearity Environmental, which was founded to expand the mold prevention services of KEM beyond the DMV area.

We are grateful for the expertise and passion that Brent brings to our organization. Welcome to the RTMC team, Brent!

Homeowner Stories: Our Neighbor, Mrs. N.

Mrs. N., her son Ryan, and her two grandsons in front of her home

Mrs. N.'s son, Ryan,* was the first to reach out to RTMC when water damage from his mother's leaking roof became so severe that the ceiling in her kitchen fell through. Mrs. N. is an elderly woman who has lived in her home in Silver Spring for more than 15 years. Ryan is a single father, and his mother helps to take care of her grandsons during the day while he is at work. Mrs. N.'s roof was in dire need of replacement, and our partners at Central Exteriors worked quickly to replace the roof and the rotten sheets of plywood that had been badly damaged by water intrusion. Mrs. N. will no longer have to fear for the safety of her grandchildren when they are staying with her - she and her family will be safe and dry in her home for years to come. She told us after the repairs were completed, "I think I've got the best looking roof here!"

Homeowner Stories: Our Neighbor, Mr. M.

During the winter, RTMC receives many calls from homeowners who are living without heat due to broken heating systems. RTMC recently helped restore heat for an elderly neighbor in Gaithersburg, Mr. M., who had been forced to rely on space heaters for several weeks after his heating unit broke down. With temperatures below freezing, RTMC worked quickly to replace the broken unit. Thanks to our partners at Cool Breeze Plumbing, Heating & A/C, we were able to install a brand-new heating unit for Mr. M. and ensure he will stay warm in his home for years to come. In Mr. M.’s own words, "With your efforts and your office, warmth and health returned to my cold home."

Help Us Find Storage Space

RTMC is in dire need of storage space to store supplies and materials we use to keep homes safe for Montgomery County residents. We need help finding a secure storage area, ideally at least 750 sq. ft. of either donated or deeply discounted space. If you or anyone you know can help, please contact our Executive Director, Maury Peterson, at [email protected]

Help Us Reach More Homeowners in Need

We are always looking for ways to reach more of our neighbors in need and expand our outreach efforts in the community. As part of our newest initiative, we are launching a QR code that, when scanned, takes homeowners interested in learning more about our services directly to our Apply for Services webpage.

We need your help launching this initiative! Do you know of places near you with a community bulletin board or a place to share community information? Print out our Interested Homeowner Information Flyer and help us distribute it on community bulletin boards in your area. The flyer features both our new QR code as well as tear-off tabs.
