Introducing the Horizon Initiative Summer 2022

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, God’s mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. – Lamentations 3:22-23

Dear Lakeside Family, As we hope you are aware, Lakeside Presbyterian has identified and engaged a group of our church family to spearhead what we decided to call our “Horizon Initiative.” This task force includes members with a long history of worshiping, learning and serving at Lakeside. They believe completing this initiative will free up our energies and resources to move toward our new horizon.

Over the next several weeks, you will be given many opportunities to see and hear in more detail all that the Horizon Initiative entails. At this time, the task force and Session felt it important to share the following:

1.    Three needed projects have been identified as significant barriers that impact our ability to move forward with our vision in this pivotal moment, totaling an estimated $770,000. Your task force has actively engaged suppliers, receiving estimates or proposals that address these in a cost-effective manner. The target is to complete all of these by Summer 2023. Organ Intervention to repair faulty and damaged components: $250,000 HVAC Overhaul: $370,000 Mortgage Debt Elimination: $150,000 (est. balance end of 2022)

2.    We are truly blessed and grateful to have a few very generous families step up to inspire us with significant leadership commitments to accomplish these 3 projects now to free up our mental, financial, and spiritual assets so we can listen and respond to God’s call in this moment.

Endowment Contributions This includes money from the already-allocated “spendable” amounts over the next two years, as well as accessing the principal* up to $250,000. Please note that this requires a 2/3 majority vote at a congregational meeting. The Endowment will cover 1/2 of the total cost.

Individual Contributions This includes the generous families’ gifts and hopefully, full participation from all the members of the Lakeside family as you are moved and able. We’re hopeful that, inspired by the families’ generosity, your response will cover 1/6 ($130,000) of the total with our the families covering 1/3 of the total cost (even though they have agreed to cover more should the additional individual contributions not reach 1/6 of the cost).

* One more amazing commitment: If accessing the principal is approved by the congregation, one donor family committed to replenish any Endowment principal used via a Charitable Remainder Unitrust. These funds (principal and earnings) would be returned to Lakeside 15 years from now.

3.    Unanimously, your Endowment Committee recommended and Session approved this plan.  Please be on the lookout for opportunities to learn more – Q&As with representatives from Endowment and the Horizon Task Force and August Organ Talks/Tours with Thom Miles to name a few.   Please save these important dates: September 11 - Congregation Horizon Lunch September 18 – Congregational meeting to vote on our support for the plan for the use of our Endowment.   The initiative has already inspired some tremendous generosity. We hope you are inspired, too.
