MEET THE CANDIDATES FOR
HYLA'S 2021-2022 BOARD OF DIRECTORS

HYLA's elections for its 2021-2022 Board of Directors will begin on Wednesday, April 7 at 10 am, and the candidates have been finalized. We are proud to introduce them below. Please note that all officer positions are uncontested. The below candidates for Director positions are running for nine available spots. Best of luck to the candidates, and congratulations to our new officers!

OFFICERS

KELLY HANEN
President-Elect

Kelly is a trial associate at Baker Botts and has been on the HYLA Board since 2018. Prior to joining Baker Botts, Kelly graduated from UT Law and Dartmouth College. During her time on the Board, Kelly has served as co-chair of HYLA’s Membership Committee and is currently serving as the HYLA Secretary. As President-Elect, Kelly will continue to find opportunities for member engagement in today’s virtual world. She is looking forward to being able to connect with other young lawyers in person and will prepare the organization for that transition when it is finally possible!


BENJAMIN RITZ
Secretary

A Houston native, Benjamin is running for HYLA Secretary to maintain our information infrastructure while serving in HYLA’s learning and leading programs. Benjamin also assisted with HYLA’s transition from physical to zoom meetings. He is well-versed in learning and leadership, having served on HYLA’s monthly CLE team, in HYLA’s Leadership Academy, as well as presenting within HYLA and at the Inns of Court.  A former law clerk, Benjamin practices complex commercial insurance litigation and appeals.  In his spare time, Benjamin enjoys physical and digital board games, theater, food, and learning about technology.


ADAUGO "GLENDA" DURU
Treasurer

Adaugo “Glenda” is a native of Houston, Texas and currently serves as an ACA with the Harris County Attorney’s Office in the Child Protection Division. As a member of HYLA since 2013, she is a fellow of the HYLA Leadership Academy 2018-2019, served as a member of the Activity and Entertainment Committee 2019-2020, and the Co-Chair to the Diversity and Inclusion Committee for two consecutive years. As the Committee Co-Chair for the D&I Committee, she co-chaired the Pioneer in Law: Women’s Breakfast/Summit. After serving on the HYLA Board of Directors, Glenda is excited to now serve as your 2021-2022 Treasurer.

MARIAME AANA

Mariame is a Houston-area nonprofit lawyer. She has been practicing since 2013 in the areas of immigration and family law. After her undergraduate degree at Rice University in English and in French Studies, Mariame acquired a Master in Liberal Arts in International Studies at University of St. Thomas. She then attended University of Houston Law Center, where she was a member of Houston Law Review and Order of the Barons while also pursuing a Master of Business Administration. Mariame has been active in HYLA since 2018 in various capacities including Co-Chairing the Nonprofit, Leadership Academy, and Generation Generosity Committees.


PATRICK AANA

Patrick is an international arbitration associate at Norton Rose Fulbright. He graduated from Texas Law in 2019 and moved back to Houston after taking bar. Before moving to Austin for law school, Patrick had lived in Houston his entire life, graduating from local universities and working for several years at a nonprofit. He participated in the HYLA Leadership Academy and has been on the HYLA board since the 2020-21 bar year, when he co-chaired the Signature Events Committee and started and began co-hosting the “Hylights” podcast with Femi Aborisade. Patrick maintains involvement in pro bono clinics and cases. 


BROOKSIE BOUTET

Brooksie is a trial attorney at Shipley Snell Montgomery, LLP. Over her five years as a HYLA member, Brooksie has co-chaired the Mentorship & Transitions Committee and been highly involved in the Adopt-an-Angel Program. In 2019, she completed the Leadership Academy and was selected as a HYLF fellow. This bar year Brooksie co-presented a HYLA CLE on attorney-client privilege and two panel events. She is also active in the HBA, as co-chair of the Fun Run Committee and host of The Houston Lawyer Podcast. If elected, Brooksie would like to continue serving HYLA by connecting our members for mentorship opportunities.

CARTER DICKSON

Carter Dickson is a 2018 graduate of the University of Houston Law Center where he obtained his JD and LL.M in Energy, Environmental, and Natural Resource law. In law school, Carter was a champion advocate and Moot Court director, and he was a student representative on the HYLA executive board for two years. Carter is currently a business litigation associate at Winstead PC where his practice focuses on energy litigation and alternative dispute resolution. As a Director on the HYLA Board, Carter plans to continue growing HYLA membership and reinforce programs connecting the Houston bar to communities in need.

FABIO DWORSCHAK

Fabio is a fifth-year associate at Kelley Drye & Warren LLP focusing on environmental and commercial disputes and appeals in state and federal courts. Fabio also dedicates much of his time to pro bono work, spending over 600 hours in the last two years helping low-income Houstonians, veterans, and female asylum seekers. He has participated in HYLA’s Leadership Academy and served on various HBA committees. Before becoming an attorney, Fabio served as an Army medic during deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq, earning the Combat Medic Badge in Iraq for medical services rendered while under hostile fire.

AMY FARISH

Amy’s practice at Yetter Coleman focuses on commercial litigation with experience that includes representing clients in a diverse range of disputes involving class action securities, intellectual property, and complex contract issues. She received her J.D. from The University of Texas, where she graduated with honors and served as the Symposium Editor for the Texas Review of Litigation and as Staff Editor of the Texas Journal of Women and the Law. Prior to joining the firm, Amy practiced with Baker Botts in Houston and Dallas. She also was a law clerk for Justice Debra Lehrmann of the Texas Supreme Court.

EDWARD FESTERYGA

Edward is an associate at Abraham Watkins, representing plaintiffs in all types of personal injury claims, focusing on catastrophic injury and wrongful death. Edward, who is originally from a small farming community in Ontario, Canada, graduated from the University of Texas School of Law in 2016 before finding his way to Houston in 2018. Edward has served on the HYLA Skeet Shoot Committee for the past two years. In the time-before-law (and even after), Edward pursued a career in professional sports. He is a 2009 National Football Champion and was a semi-professional hockey player.

RYAN FRANKEL

Ryan is a commercial litigation associate at Gray Reed & McGraw LLP. His practice consists of general commercial litigation, energy litigation, and real estate litigation. He grew up in Houston and went to undergrad and to law school at the University of Texas. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his family, collecting sports memorabilia, and cheering on Houston sports teams – through the good times and the (mostly) bad.

KIARA GRADNEY

Kiara is a servant leader and advocate for the advancement of community. Kiara is an Associate at Ware Jackson and a former prosecutor. She serves as co-chair of the HYLA First Generation Attorneys Committee and was a CLE Committee member. In those roles, Kiara spearheaded events including, “Getting on Track for Success” and “Back to the Basics.” Outside of HYLA, Kiara has shown her commitment to community by serving on the Houston Independent Police Oversight Board. Kiara supports HYLA’s mission of community leadership and meaningful service, and will continue to bring government, non-profit, and first-generation attorneys into the HYLA family.

RICK HOUGHTON

Rick is an associate at Smyser Kaplan & Veselka LLP, focusing on commercial litigation and white collar criminal defense. He serves on the HYLA Leadership Academy Committee, was a Leadership Academy member in 2018, and is a current HYLF Fellow. A Pittsburgh native, Rick moved to Houston as fast as he could and, once here, clerked for the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals and the Southern District of Texas. Rick graduated from Harvard Law School, the University of Oxford, and West Point. Before law school, Rick served as an Army Officer for six years in a variety of assignments.

CURRY

Brittny is a passionate public servant with over twelve years of non-profit board leadership and advisory experience. As a Staff Attorney Fellow with Houston Volunteer Lawyers, Brittny co-chairs the New Attorney Pro Bono Project, training up a new generation of young attorneys for pro bono volunteerism benefiting Houstonians in need. Brittny previously served on the HYLA Board as a Law Student Director representing South Texas College of Law Houston, and she currently co-chairs HYLA’s Diversity & Inclusion Committee. Brittny is a member of the 2020-2021 HYLA Leadership Academy and a Board Trustee for Women of Law.


DANIEL O'NEIL

Daniel is a personal injury trial lawyer with one of the nation’s leading specialized insurers. A Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation, Daniel served HYLA the past bar year as Director, co-chair of the CLE Committee, Chair of the Spanish Class Committee, and a member of the Leadership Academy Class of 2021. Mayor Turner proclaimed October 1, 2018 “Daniel O’Neil Day” in the City of Houston, honoring his history of volunteer service uplifting and supporting the community’s most vulnerable and disaster impacted families.
