Psychological first aid (PFA) has been endorsed by the World Health Organization, the American Psychiatric Association, the United Nations, and the American Psychological Association. Scientific American has deemed it an important life skill. It may be utilized by physicians, psychologists, social workers, educators, public health and safety personnel, and others. It is an emerging standard of care for staff support programs in healthcare.
When applied in the community, it may serve to increase crisis and disaster-driven access to psychological support. This presentation will provide an overview of PFA, review empirically derived core elements, and review relevant research.
Educational Objectives
As a result of participating in this activity, learners should be able to:
1. Define Psychological First Aid (PFA)
2. List its three core mechanisms of action
3. List three settings wherein PFA may be applied
