Colleagues,

Moments ago the Harold Alfond Foundation announced an historic $500 million investment in Maine and its people. I'm incredibly proud that the University of Maine System will be among the Maine entities sharing in this transformational gift.

Let me say first that UMS will make an announcement tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. about the specific Harold Alfond Foundation investments in our public universities. There is much good news to share.

And today's announcement comes at a time when we need good news. We should have the confidence and resilience to face our future with optimism, and the Harold Alfond Foundation's new investments in our public university system will be an important catalyst for us to do so. We will be able to expand and accelerate much of the very good work that our faculty, staff, and students have initiated.

The eight Maine organizations receiving Alfond investments have a critical role to play in transforming the state's economy and securing a bright, prosperous future for its citizens. Working together, our organizations can make important advancements in education, innovation and research, and workforce development, all strengthening the State and its people.

Watch for another email from me tomorrow morning, when I'll share some initial details about the exciting initiatives we'll pursue with the Harold Alfond Foundation's transformational investments in our people and our programs. Our universities and their faculties and staff will shape these initiatives from the beginning, and I look forward to the leadership our presidents and their academic and research communities will display as we move forward.

Maine's people are looking to public higher education for inspiration and results that make their lives better. Today's announcement from the Harold Alfond Foundation demonstrates that the State of Maine's confidence in our public university system's ability to do so is well-placed.

More tomorrow,
