The Hernandez Center
for Adjunctive Cancer Care

When we look around us, we see matter in a number of different forms.  The wooden desk I am writing at now is quite solid and sturdy.  It is stoic in its unmoving state.  But if I were to examine the desktop with an electron microscope, I would see that what appears to be solid is just a configuration of pulsating molecules held together in a particular electromagnetic configuration with large spaces in between.  How easy to forget that e verything in creation is energetic.  And it would be unscientific and myopic to  consider even for a moment that our human organisms are any different -- they are just more complex and subject to more influences than my solid-appearing desk.   In this newsletter, we explore some of these invisible influences.

As always, Dr. Connie begins with her  musings, this month focusing on vibratory fields and influences; Dr. Marcel writes about the role of spirit as an invisible influence; Jane H. offers an approach to unblocking stuck energy; Anandini W. shows us the steps of an exercise to unblock energy; and Dr. Connie explores the influence of breath in the body.

The
Hernandez Center for Adjunctive Cancer Care  articles include an article on cancer treatment at the end of life, a new twist on immunotherapy and a laser device that kills melanoma cells in the blood.

Our patients love our I onic Detox Foot Bath.

Dr. Connie Muses on
Invisible Influences on Illness

by Connie Hernandez, ND
As science and medicine have evolved out of the age of matter into the age of energy, much that was once invisible has become visible. Diagnostically, through electron microscopy, ultrasound, x- ray, magnetic resonance imaging and the like, we are able to see organs, tissues, cells, microbes. Through sophisticated scientific technique and brilliant biochemistry, we can measure metabolites and clarify metabolic pathways; map out molecular structures, quantify hormones and nutrients.

We find way s to improve health by manipulating that which we can see, that which we can quantify, that which we understand. As our understanding of matter and energy has become more sophisticated, we have seen that visible physical form coalesces around invisible energetic patterning.  All living tissues both spring from that patterning and generate their own vibration. Every gland, organ and tissue in the body vibrates at its own unique rate. As does every microorganism. These vibrational fields, though unseen, can be detected and measured.

Manifestation of Your Highest Vision

by Marcel Hernandez, ND

There are so many energetic or invisible influences on health that for many days after Dr. Connie and I chose this topic I didn't know which direction to go in.  Should I address the controversy surrounding electromagnetic fields? (We will be attending the first international conference focused on this topic in September, so I will wait until we return from the conference to sum it up for our readers.)  Should I address the energetic interchange between humans that lies at the core of our daily experiences?  How about the questionable manner in which our minds sometimes operate in response to external events?  None of the above motivated me to write.

Then I thought, the greatest invisible influence on our health is how what happens in our own consciousness filters down into our daily experience and expression of life.

Energy Makes the World Go Round...Literally

Jane Hernandez, CCHT
Sometimes I feel that my talks about EFT Tapping sound like the snake oil remedies of old. How can this (very odd) technique of tapping on acupuncture points of the face and trunk effect so many positive results? How can this one thing lessen acute anxiety, stop smoking, help you sleep all night, lessen pain and, well, help just about everything?

Everything in the world is composed of energy , down to the smallest part of the atom. Everything is pulsing and vibrating and we are a part of that. At our best, the energy is smooth and flowing and that is what we want. However, the energy gets stuck when we suffer unfortunate events and our minds fixate on negative thoughts.

Acupuncture...
A Trembling Horse for Your Stress

Anandini Wadera, L.Ac.

Chinese Medicine accesses the body's Qi in order to bring the body to balance and health. While most people understand Qi to be the electromagnetic waves our bodies emit and use to function (think electrical waves of the heart and electrical pulses in neurons), some say Qi is simply breath; either way, it's an invisible unit, building block of sorts, used to indicate the body's strength and quality of circulation.

Since free and smooth flowing Qi demarcates health, I'd like to put forth a Qi Gong exercise that only takes a few minutes for when Qi may not be flowing smoothly. If we aren't paying attention, Qi stops circulating through the body and either slows down, stagnates or creates blockages, leading to sluggishness, aches and pains and gastric discomfort. The most common culprit of Qi stagnation is stress.

Next time you feel stressed, irked by a colleague's comment, a disappointed by your mismatched socks, simply do the Trembling Horse! It's less than a minute, the perfect amount of silly and a huge release.

1.   Stand with your feet wider than hip width, with your knees slightly bent, and your arms relaxed by your side.

2. Take 1-2 deep breaths from your nose, letting your belly expand completely as it fills with air.

3. As you inhale, begin to loosely shake your wrists. Some people like to shake their entire arms during the inhale like in the video, below, but you do not need to do this.

4. On your final exhale, forcefully exhale through your mouth and allow your body to shake from your shoulders down to your wrists and fingers and your neck down to your hips. The movement should resemble that of a horse shaking off a pesky fly.

Breath, Life, Health

by Dr. Connie Hernandez

Every moment of every day of our lives, from our first inhalation, to our last exhalation, each one of us is subject in body and in consciousness to that invisible reality that is our breath. Breath is life, the essence of existence, prana. The word inspiration is derived from the Latin inspirarae, meaning to breathe into or inspire.

Most of us pass our days without giving too much thought to our breath, though we are aware of changes in the depth and pace of our breath when we panic or sigh in relief or birth our babies or relax. Study of and practice of conscious breathing techniques allows us to radically alter our health and our experience of life. Ancient and modern day yogis have long relied on various pranayama techniques to tune in to and control aspects of consciousness.

Ionic Detoxification  Foot Baths in Our Office!

For years we resisted this form of therapy thinking it too woo-woo for our patients.  Then the manufacturer showed us before and after heavy metal testing results performed on foot bath patients.  We were impressed!

Dr. Connie experiences ionic foot bath at a conference

How long are the sessions?

Sessions last 30 to 45 minutes. Patients can just sit and relax, read or doze during the session.

What will a person experience?

Nothing except a warm water foot soak during treatment.  Afterward, people may experience a pleasant tingling sensation in the feet. Most people also experience a deep relaxation effect and for some, better sleep.  Often people experience more energy and alertness and a clearing of brain fog.

How often should a person receive treatment?

Any detoxification program has a cumulative effect with repeated treatments.  However, each individual session provides benefits. We offer discount packages for people who desire sustained positive effects. Ideally, people should receive three treatments a week separated by one or two days.

What times are available for treatment?

Any time the office is open.

How much do treatments cost?

Single Session:            $50
6 Session Package:      $255 ($42.50 per treatment, a 15% discount)
12 Session Package:    $480 ($40 per treatment, a 20% discount)
* Package purchases must be paid at the time of scheduling.

About food:
Harissa Condiment

Dr. Connie and I enjoy cooking programs on TV.  A few weeks ago, we stumbled upon one episode of a British cooking show we had never seen, and we cannot seem to find again.  The male chef offered delightful recipes, one of which was a Harisa condiment.  I adapted his recipe a bit and it turned out absolutely scrumptious.

This spicy, extremely versatile North African condiment has many versions, but usually contains dried hot red pepper, coriander, cumin and garlic.

Just a small dab packs quite a punch, and can be used to brighten soups, sauces or marinades. Thinned with olive oil, it's good drizzled over grilled meat or vegetables. Store it in the refrigerator for up to 1 month.

Ingredients

- 2 hot chilis, roasted with no oil, salt, or pepper
- 1 sweet red bell pepper, roasted with no oil, salt, or pepper. Remove charred skin after roasting.  (I roasted them in a toaster oven, then while hot put them in a bowl with saran wrap over the edge of the bowls.  The steam helped the skins peel off easily. Remove seeds as well)
- 8 cloves of fresh garlic, crushed
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp ground coriander
- 2 tbl tomato paste
- ¼ cup cilantro, including stems
- ½ tsp salt
- 2 tbl olive oil, not overdone
- 2 tsp sugar (I used coconut sugar.  Zero glycemic monk fruit sugar is also an option.)

Put all ingredients in blender and voila!

ENJOY!

Breast Thermography at
Pacific Naturopathic

- how food choices influence thermographic readings -

thermography

Mammograms, MRIs and ultrasounds reveal lumps and bumps which have formed in the body.  These may be calcifications, solid or fluid cysts, tumors, fibrotic tissue.
Prior to these structural changes, there are the physiologic changes which promote anatomic change.

Thermography detects physiologic change as a higher temperature on a specific area of one breast than the temperature on the correspondent area on the other breast, or an increase in temperature in a specific area over repeated exams. Higher temperatures reflect higher metabolic rates, which in turn may represent inflammation, response to injury, or the development of abnormal tissue. When we are able to detect a potential problem before the tissue itself is changed, we can seek and address the cause, and hopefully prevent damage and disease.

Breast thermography is offered on most Wednesdays at Pacific Naturopathic.

Dr. Connie and Dr. Marcel sat on this bench
waiting for the Perseid meteor shower to begin.

Finding yourself in need of a quiet space in which you might restore your outer self through communion with nature, and re-experience the peace and calmness of your deep inner Self?

It was  a night of the recent Perseid Meteor Showers. Dr. Marcel and I relaxed on our much photographed bench, overlooking the ocean, at the end of the Retreat Center property. Basking in the light and shadow of late evening on a near full moon night, gazing upward, we saw stars twinkling in and out. It was too early for the shooting stars, but the profound stillness of the night drew us onward. We wandered to our central field and were rewarded with clear views of numerous stars and constellations, all in the awesome expanse of space.  Still no shooting star, but early the next morning, woken by the slight quaking of the earth and drawn outside, our shooting star found us.  These moments are precious, and they are healing.

Do you remember nights like this from your childhood? The energy of the moon and the stars and all of the earth elements is the invisible healing force of nature. Opportunities to enjoy these energies are abundant in Hawaii.  Check our calendar if you'd like to stay at our vacation rental.

C heck our VACATION RENTAL CALENDAR   and see if there is an opening that works for you.

What We Offer  at the  Hernandez Center
for Adjunctive Cancer Care

There is light in the darkness

Our cancer patients often ask us to give them an estimate of the effectiveness of therapy at the Hernandez Center for Adjunctive Cancer Care. We respond that  our entire focus is on helping our patients stay healthy, upbeat and positive.

The truth is that the botanical and nutritional therapies we offer (including  intravenous vitamin C), although 'adjunctive' in nature, have powerful documented actions in decreasing inflammation, reducing tumor load and attacking cancer stem cells.

Our mind/body approaches are focused on transformation of experience.  And our bodywork approaches help reduce muscular pain, resolve lymph drainage problems and relieve stress.

The hope we offer is not that of a miraculous cure,
although we are definitely open to miracles,
but the hope of a life lived to the fullest in dignity
and understanding, for however long that may be.

Cancer Treatment at the End of Life

As the elderly man with an incurable cancer lay dying, he told his son he had only one regret. Rather than enjoying his last weeks of life with the people and places he loved, he had squandered them on drug treatments that consumed his days and made him miserable.
Perhaps others can benefit from this man's end-of-life insight. Too often, people with incurable cancers pursue therapy beyond any hope of benefit except perhaps to the pockets of Big Pharma.

There are many reasons this happens. Some patients won't acknowledge that their death is imminent, and some doctors won't admit to them that nothing more can be done to contain the disease. Others with unstoppable cancers think that if they hang in there long enough, a new treatment may come along to reverse their fate.

Harnessing T-cell "stemness"
could enhance cancer immunotherapy

NCI Press Release, March 28, 2019
A new study led by scientists in the Center for Cancer Research (CCR) at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) sheds light on one way tumors may continue to grow despite the presence of cancer-killing immune cells. The findings, published March 29, 2019, in  Science,  suggest a way to enhance the effectiveness of immunotherapies for cancer treatment. NCI is part of the National Institutes of Health.

Laser-Based Device Detects and Kills Melanoma Cells in the Blood, Study Finds

National Cancer Institute Staff

Scientists have developed a noninvasive device that may not only detect  melanoma cells traveling through the bloodstream, but also kill them.
The device, which the investigators call Cytophone, accurately detected cancer cells in 27 out of 28 people with melanoma. It also reduced the amount of cancer cells in participants' blood, suggesting that it may kill the cells.

The device uses laser beams and sound waves to  scan circulating blood for melanoma cells. It does not require any needles or blood draws and can scan a person's entire volume of blood-about 5 liters-in a matter of hours.
