BOOK CLUB 2025 | Summer Edition
A new season of literary conversations begins
The Italian Cultural Institute in Haifa is pleased to inaugurate the Summer Edition of its Book Club 2025 with an online literary encounter dedicated to “The Children’s Train” by Viola Ardone—an intense and poignant novel inspired by real post-war events in southern Italy.
The discussion will be led by Shirley Finzi Loew, literary translator and expert in Italian literature, and will take place on Wednesday, 4 June 2025, at 18:00 (Israel time), in Hebrew and online, via Webex and YouTube.
Participation is free of charge.

We warmly encourage participants to read the book in advance, either in the original Italian or in translation, to fully engage in the conversation. The Italian edition is available at the Institute’s LIBRARY, in both printed and digital format (via MLOL).

“IL TRENO DEI BAMBINI”, di Viola Ardone | Un romanzo intenso e commovente che racconta la storia di un bambino nato nella Napoli poverissima del dopoguerra. In un contesto segnato dalla miseria e dalle difficoltà quotidiane, al protagonista viene offerta un’occasione unica per cambiare il proprio destino. Ma per coglierla dovrà affrontare la più dolorosa delle rinunce: allontanarsi dalla sua famiglia e dalle sue radici. Ispirato a eventi storici realmente accaduti, il romanzo è narrato con una sincerità disarmante e una forza emotiva che cattura il lettore fin dalle prime pagine.

Amidst a backdrop of hardship and daily struggle, the young protagonist is offered a rare opportunity to change the course of his life. Yet, in order to seize it, he must face the most painful of sacrifices: leaving behind his family and the roots that shaped him. Inspired by true historical events, the novel is told with disarming honesty and emotional depth, captivating the reader from the very first page.

שירלי פינצי לב היא מתרגמת ומרצה המתמחה בספרות איטלקית, שתרגמה לעברית עשרות ספרים מאת סופרים בולטים כמו מורנטה, גינצבורג, סטארנונה ורובלי. היא משתפת פעולה עם המכון האיטלקי לתרבות בחיפה ועם אגודת דנטה אליגיירי בירושלים, ומקדמת את התרבות האיטלקית בישראל דרך בלוג אישי ופעילות ציבורית, כולל חברות בוועדת פרס סטרגה בשנים 2018–2023.י
Shirley Finzi Loew è una traduttrice letteraria e docente specializzata in letteratura italiana. Dopo una carriera nel settore high-tech, ha tradottoin ebraico importanti autori italiani contemporanei, tra cui Morante, Starnone, Rovelli e Ginzburg. Colabora con l’Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Haifa e con la Società Dante Alighieri di Gerusalemme, e promuove la cultura italiana in Israele attraverso il suo blog. Dal 2018 al 2023 ha fatto parte della giuria del Premio Strega per gli Istituti Italiani di Cultura di Tel Aviv e Haifa.
Shirley Finzi Loew is a literary translator and educator specializing in Italian literature. After a career in high-tech, she has translated over thirty works into Hebrew, including titles by Morante, Ginzburg, Starnone, and Rovelli. She colaborates with the Italian Cultural Institute in Haifa and the Dante Alighieri Society in Jerusalem, and promotes Italian culture in Israel through her blog. From 2018 to 2023, she was a Strega Prize juror for the Italian Cultural Institutes in Tel Aviv and Haifa.
