Background, purpose and synopsis
The webinar will cover policy and planning considerations for energy and electricity in South Africa in the years to 2050, and will constructively critique the draft Integrated Resource Plan for Electricity (draft IRP) by presenting the outcomes of independent analysis and modelling of the data contained in the document by respected, independent modelling experts in South Africa.
The latest version of the draft IRP to replace the outdated IRP 2019 was recently prepared by the former Department of Mineral Resources and energy (DMRE) and the South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI), with modelling resources seconded from Eskom.
The draft IRP is currently undergoing a formal consultation process by the National Economic Development and Labour Council (NEDLAC), involving government, business, labour and communities, before being submitted to the Cabinet for “policy adjustment”, and then finalisation and publishing in the Government Gazette.
Respected speakers at the webinar will consider, analyse and present on different aspects of the draft IRP, including security of supply, sustainability, energy mix, carbon and other by-products, meeting climate-change commitments, water use, economics and costs, electricity price trajectory, and job creation.
Where assumptions, outcomes and other information in the draft IRP are found to be absent, inadequate or questionable, these will be highlighted, and speakers may present their own findings of the optimal energy mix and build rates for South Africa according to their own modelling.
