Background, purpose and synopsis

Following successful piloting, Eskom has recently announced Virtual Wheeling as an available product and service offering to off-takers connected to either Eskom or municipal networks and supplied at high-, medium- or low-voltage.

The Virtual Wheeling Platform was co-developed by Eskom and Vodacom subsidiary, Mezzanine, to address the complexities of delivering renewable energy to Vodacom’s extensive network of over 15,000 low-voltage sites across 168 municipalities.

While leaving existing contractual, metering and billing arrangements with the Eskom or municipal distributors in place without change, the Virtual Wheeling Platform enables a customer to obtain rebates for energy purchased from a renewable energy generator or trader.

This enables a wider range of companies, supplied by Eskom or municipal distributors, to access cleaner, renewable energy sources at reduced cost. This supports sustainability initiatives while reducing the customers’ carbon footprint and contributing to the stabilisation of the grid without the need to install on-site renewable energy solutions.

On 12 October 2023, EE Business intelligence hosted webinar to introduce Virtual Wheeling to electricity customers. On 30 January 2024 this was followed a further webinar on the concept of Token Wheeling to address some of the issues arising with Virtual Wheeling.

Now that Virtual Wheeling is broadly available as a product and service offering from Eskom, it was felt it would be useful to conduct a further webinar to explain exactly how Virtual Wheeling works, the practicalities of implementation, and the limitations and risks involved.
