NEW EDITORIAL

AN INVITATION

BY TAMARA STRIJACK

“Just make a mark,” Tammy said, as she boldly drew a messy line on her paper.

I had been the kind of girl who coloured between the lines. I wasn’t comfortable with things that were uncomfortable. Things I didn’t know how to do. Things that were messy. Yet something had been shifting and I knew there were things inside, things that didn’t fit between the lines, that wanted out.

“Just make a mark,” she said. And something in that statement melted for a moment the internal messages that had been keeping me captive. The ones that were whispering not so quietly, “Don’t you dare make any mark unless you know first that it is right!”

Editors note: Tamara will be offering an opportunity to dive deeper in to the practice of facilitating play for others - whatever your role - starting online in February 2024. See Scheduled Online Classes (below) for more details.

We would like to express our immense gratitude for the outstanding service of Shauna Pham to the Neufeld Institute. What she gave was far above and beyond expectations. Shauna was basically responsible for making things work in the organization, but always gave the impression that it was never work for her. This made it easy to lean on her. Although she worked for us, we always had the impression it was the other way around, which is how much she embodied the soul and spirit of the organization. She will be as sorely missed by us as we are sure her grandchildren will be fulfilled by her.

With deep appreciation,

Gordon, Joy & the Neufeld Institute administrative crew

WORKSHOP WITH TAMARA STRIJACK & HANNAH BEACH

Reclaiming Play:

Where it went. Why we need it.

And what we can do to bring it back.

We live in a world where play is being replaced with entertainment and skills-based activities. We are now seeing the emotional side effects of the loss of play in the lives of children as aggression and anxiety in our young increases. Play provides a safe space to access our feelings and in doing so it serves a significant role in the unfolding of human potential. When we hear the word ‘play’, many of us think of young children and toys. This workshop will expand our understanding of what ‘play’ is (and what it isn’t) and its importance as a key driver of growth, learning and resilience.

JUST-ANNOUNCED PRESENTATION BY DR. NEUFELD!

The Youth Mental Health Crisis: Insights and Solutions to Help Children Flourish

The alarming rise in anxiety, depression, despair, and attention problems, begs for an explanation. The prevailing premise blames the social isolation experienced during the pandemic. When the dots are joined however, another picture emerges that reveals the attachment roots of mental health. This current mental health crisis provides us with a unique opportunity to understand the underlying dynamics, giving us a guide to better take care of our children, our students and ourselves.
