How do we explain this teaching to our children? How do we even understand it for ourselves? And now we are teaching partly with the aid of "home study" packets! While it can present challenges, it also offers new opportunities, especially by drawing the parents, the first teachers of their children, into our programs!

Truly we give our lives in so many ways! We take up our various crosses. We push on through when the going gets rough and we share our joys as they come.

But where do we find the understanding of our crosses and the strength to carry them? I believe this is why the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray; they saw a behavior in Jesus that somehow separated him from the anxieties of this world and gave him the strength to carry on. And he taught them a prayer.

Would that we could quiet ourselves to sit with Jesus as Mary did, and teach our children to do the same!

Is it enough to just pray the Our Father to say the words that are so familiar to us? Perhaps Jesus intended for us to go deeper, to understand how to approach God, his father and ours, in different ways.

The catechism speaks of the seven petitions written into the Our Father. Yes, God wants us to ask! But perhaps the Our Father can teach us even more, taking our relationship with him to a whole new level!
