IoD Ireland Members' Update

April 2022

Maura_Quinn_Sept_2019_cropped_280_280_c1.jpg

Dear Anne,

It was a pleasure to welcome members and their guests at our Spring Lunch last week. The address by Minister Michael McGrath, Minister of Public Expenditure and Reform, covered a range of important issues of the day, not least the many challenges faced by business and Government through the first quarter of the year, in particular. Minister McGrath also offered his insights on the key document that is the National Development Plan. Our thanks to Minister McGrath for taking the time and consideration to address IoD members at our first Spring Lunch since the pandemic arrived on our shores, and to our Spring Lunch sponsor, Presidio.

There seems to be no end of topical issues at the present moment. War in Ukraine and its many consequences (not least, humanitarian), inflation, supply chain issues, a resurgence of COVID-19 cases, and more. A turbulent and uncertain first quarter of the year. It is in such a multi-faceted context that we are seeking our members views on these issues and how they are impacting you, your primary organisations, the economy and wider society. We value your views and would be grateful if you could find the time to complete our Director Sentiment Monitor survey for Q1 2022 (see panel and link below). Much appreciated.

Given such challenging times, our upcoming webinar on 7th April titled, 'Dealing with Resourcing and Talent Challenges in Your Organisation', is more pertinent with each passing day (see details below).

Director training is a key element of continuing professional development and below you will find details of two fundamentally important workshops in the coming weeks.

Congratulations are in order to our latest qualified Chartered Directors. The IoD is the only body in Ireland that provides the full designation and recognition as a professional Chartered Director (CDir). We are now enrolling for September 2022 cohorts, but please be mindful that places are limited.

Thank you.

Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive: What Irish Companies Need to Know

Our latest Director Factsheet, from McCann FitzGerald LLP, looks at the new proposal for a Directive on Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence. It proposes to introduce new obligations for in-scope companies to identify and, where necessary, prevent, end or mitigate adverse impacts of their activities on human rights and on the environment, and, in the case of certain larger companies, to have a plan to ensure that their business strategy is compatible with limiting global warming to 1.5 °C in line with the Paris Agreement.

New Research by Accenture | Digital Index 2022

The 2022 Accenture Digital Index, ‘Towards a Digital Society’, examines the state of the digital divide in Ireland – the gap between the digitally engaged and disengaged - and reveals the long-standing issues in our emerging digital society have become more nuanced. While the report notes that barriers to digital engagement are coming down, skills gaps that persist could mean a cohort of people risk being isolated from the digital economy. Read the Report
