IoD Members' Update
February 2022
|
|
Dear Member
The lifting of many of the public health restrictions has provided a bright and encouraging start to the new year. So, did our recent event with Gabriel Makhlouf, Governor, Central Bank of Ireland, when he outlined his expectation that growth would return to pre-pandemic levels, however, he did warn about the rising cost of inflation. The recording of this webinar is now available on the IoD Ireland website as a webcast, exclusive to all members.
The IoD looks forward to the return of our live in-person events over the coming weeks and months, offering our members the chance to listen and engage with expert speakers and, also, to meet their fellow members, some for the first time. We will be announcing these events in due course. That said, we will also be retaining our webinar offerings, so we will be moving forward into this new future with a blend of in-person and online events and professional development.
On that note, we are delighted to present renowned writer, communicator and strategist, Alastair Campbell, at our Lunch Bites @ the IoD webinar on Thursday, 10th February. It is sure to be an engaging and thought-provoking session, and you can book your place below.
Our latest quarterly Director Sentiment Monitor (DSM) report, published just last week, has some interesting new findings in regard to Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance (ESG) issues, which have increased in significance since the onset of COVID-19, as well as sentiment findings in relation to the appeal of serving on boards, inflation and supply chain issues, the economy, and more. The findings, which garnered considerable attention from national and local media, are invaluable to the IoD and we sincerely appreciate our members taking the time to consider the questions in this research. Thank you.

Director Factsheet | Companies (Corporate Enforcement Authority) Act 2021: Welcome Updating of Companies Legislation
|
|
McCann FitzGerald LLP Factsheet
February 2021
Our latest Director Factsheet, from McCann FitzGerald LLP, looks at the Companies (Corporate Enforcement Authority) Act 2021 (the “Act”), which was signed into law on 22nd December 2021 and, although not yet commenced, it is expected that a commencement order or orders will be made in early 2022. The primary purpose of the Act is to transform the Office of the Director of Corporate Enforcement into a statutory and independent agency (to be known as the Corporate Enforcement Authority or “CEA”) with additional resources to investigate and prosecute so-called white-collar crime. However, the Act also makes a range of changes to companies legislation generally, on which this briefing focusses.
Our sincere thanks to McCann FitzGerald LLP for their ongoing assistance in producing the IoD Factsheets.

Research Results: IoD Director Sentiment Monitor
Q4 2021
|
|
The IoD Ireland Director Sentiment Monitor (DSM) tracks our members’ sentiments across a range of issues on a quarterly basis.
The latest research covering the period Q4 2021 has just been published. You may have already read or heard about the research on major media outlets such as RTE’s Morning Ireland programme, RTE.ie, Newstalk, The Irish Times, Irish Examiner, Thinks Business, Irish Tech News, and a host of local radio stations and newspapers.
Our Director Sentiment Monitor research for Q4 2021 has found further evidence of the growing importance of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) but the report also reveals challenges at board level. The research also contains sentiment findings in relation to the appeal of serving on boards, inflation and supply chain issues, the economy, and more.

'While increased focus on diversity and inclusion has to be welcomed, to make meaningful and lasting change," she writes, "boards and business leaders must implement policies and embed a culture of belonging that celebrates differences and enables all of their employees to develop and thrive."

Scott Ellis is part of the leadership team at Gate One, a digital and business transformation consultancy focused on designing and delivering meaningful change.
What do you value the most from your IoD membership to date?
I have been hugely enthused by the quality of speakers, insights and inspiration from the exclusive events I have attended to date. In addition, I have come to realise the fantastic supporting resources and materials provided that are tailored to the specific challenges faced by directors in Ireland.
How do you think business leaders can best prepare for the future?
The COVID-19 pandemic has upended business in Ireland as we know it. As we seek to ‘re-open’ for business, we should acknowledge learnings for business. There is an opportunity for leaders to reimagine their organisation’s identity, how it works, and how it grows in this new world. The first step is to lead with empathy and compassion as you reconnect and reenergise your teams. Out of every crisis lies opportunity and you can engage your people, tap into their expertise and insights, and jointly imagine new systems and ways of working that are flexible, integrated, productive and more human.
