IoD Members' Update - June 2019
It's been a busy month for the IoD, with the appointment of our new President, Harry Lorton, the publication of two new pieces of research - on diversity, and our quarterly Director Sentiment Monitor for Q1 - as well as conducting numerous training workshops and events.

Over the last month, we have co-hosted events on key issues such as GDPR and the Charities Governance Code. The presentations from these events can be found in the dedicated Member's Area on our website under Briefing Presentations .

We also held a briefing, 'Preparing Yourself for the Boardroom', with Gervaise Slowey, CDir, Independent Non-Executive Director, and Harry Lorton, Independent Non-Executive Director and Chairman. If you missed the event, you can watch it back, again in our dedicated Members' Area, under Webcasts of IoD Events . This event was kindly sponsored by Mazars.

In addition, we held an event with Sarah Keane as part of our Lunch Bites series, kindly sponsored by IQ-EQ, on the challenges and complexities of working within the sporting sector.

Stay tuned for details on more IoD events coming soon.

Please do get in touch if you have any queries with regard to your membership and contact  [email protected] .

Watch out for details of our summer social and autumn training schedule, coming soon.
IoD Annual General Meeting 2019
Mr Harry Lorton was appointed President of the IoD at our AGM on 23rd May.

He succeeds Dr Michael Somers, following the completion of Dr Somer’s two-year term leading the Council of the Institute.

Also at the AGM, Mr Gary Kennedy and Ms Helen Nolan were elected to the Council of the IoD.

Director Sentiment Monitor: Q1, 2019
The results of our latest Director Sentiment Monitor survey, which is conducted on a quarterly basis to track our members’ views on key issues, have been published.

The research has revealed that Brexit remains a key concern for senior business leaders in Ireland. It also provides members' insights into business confidence and performance, financial performance, and government performance on consumer confidence and business decision-making. Read more here about the results of the Director Sentiment Monitor 2019 (Q1) .

A special thank you to all our members who took the time to complete the survey.

Eoin heads up the firm’s commercial contracts department also specialising in corporate advisory work and sports law.

What qualities do you need to succeed in business?
Optimism, determination and a thick skin!

What, in your view, is the biggest challenge facing directors in Ireland today?
For those companies who are heavily reliant on trade with the UK, the fallout from Brexit will be tough. Establishing which contracts need to be re-negotiated or amended as a result must be a priority. My advice is look to territory clauses and make sure you aren’t going to lose territorial rights to the U.K. market after it leaves the EU.

In 2019 and beyond, good corporate governance remains a priority for boards, with ever increasing scrutiny.

What do you hope to gain from your membership with the IoD?
I’m looking forward to meeting people in senior roles from a wide range of sectors and hearing their diverse range of perspectives on business and leadership. I enjoy the morning and lunchtime events which are always insightful. (Once I have managed my time well enough to facilitate my attendance!)
Balance for Better Business Report
Just last week, the government-appointed review group, Balance for Better Business, launched their first report. This report has proposed a target of at least 33% female directors for the top 20 companies listed on Euronext Dublin (ISEQ 20 companies) by the end of 2023.

As we have seen from our own preliminary research findings, there has not been sufficient progress on the gender diversity of boards. Our research has found support for gender targets from both male and female directors. For this reason, the Balance for Better Business report and its recommendations are a welcome development.

Read more on our reaction to these findings in our press release: IoD responds to government call for gender targets on boards .
