IoD Members' Update
March 2022
Dear Member

I am looking forward to meeting many of our members in person once again at our IoD Spring Lunch, on Friday, 1st April, at the InterContinental Dublin Hotel. Minister Michael McGrath TD will be our Guest Speaker at an uncertain time for Ireland and, indeed, the world. The challenges of, and recovery from, the pandemic will continue for some time, added to inflation, supply chain difficulties, and more. Those issues now co-exist with, and are escalated by the shocking war in Ukraine and the humanitarian and global economic, geopolitical consequences that will result from that situation. Minister McGrath’s address to the IoD comes during challenging times, then. Be sure to book your place or, indeed, a table (details below).

I hope many of you can also join us at our next Briefing event at The Westbury Hotel, on Thursday, 10th March, which will address the fascinating topic of cultural and societal change, and present the very real implications for your business and brand. See further details below.

In anticipation of the increased demand from directors and business leaders for further knowledge and insights on ESG for their boards, we are running our second online course on ESG titled, ‘Leading Sustainability: What Directors Need to Know and How to Do It’. Places are limited, see below for further details.

I look forward, too, to the IoD Chartered Director Programme Presentation of Certificate and Diploma in Company Direction, this Thursday, 3rd March, at the Thomas Prior Hall, Clayton Hotel, Ballsbridge, Dublin. Congratulations to all of you who have reached this stage of the programme.

Of course, these are important professional milestones in their own right, but they also constitute key stages on the journey to becoming a Chartered Director. In this context, I would like to highlight that our September 2022 Chartered Director Programme is now enrolling. See details below on how to express your interest today, and take the next step in your professional career. Our dedicated training team will be happy to assist with any information and support you may need.

For more information on upcoming workshops and events, the latest content, such as webcasts, director resources, and more, please see below.

Thank you.

Director Factsheet | Non-Executive Directors: Do Your Job or Pay the Price...
Our latest Director Factsheet, from McCann FitzGerald LLP, looks at how the legislative expectations made of executive and non-executive directors are almost identical although, in corporate governance, the respective roles have evolved differently. While an executive director must be closely involved in the management and operations of a company, a non-executive director also has an important function in overseeing the company’s affairs, systems and controls. This is in order to ensure that, as best as can be, the company is being operated lawfully and properly. A recent case in the UK highlights this.

Our sincere thanks to McCann FitzGerald LLP for their ongoing assistance in producing the IoD Factsheets.

What is the most important lesson, from your personal or business life, that has guided you the most in being a business leader?
Working in a global organisation with offices in 115 countries serving over two million commercial and public sector organisations has thought me that having empathy is crucial to business leaders. When you invest the time to see things as the other person does, you are much more likely to understand their challenges and come up with a solution that will work best.

What do you particularly value from your IoD membership?
I was a member of Cohort 6 in 2010/11. I took great value from the Chartered Director Programme, which was both a challenging and enjoyable learning experience. I would highly recommend it.
