During the state legislative session, the IAA sends out a bi-weekly legislative update. In these emails you'll get an update on what's going on at the State Capitol, and in Congress, as well as actions you can take to advocate for afterschool!

We hope this communication is helpful to you!
Federal Policy Update
After President Trump recommended to completely eliminate the 21st Century Community Learning Centers program in his budget proposal, Congress approved of a $10 million increase to the program for fiscal year 2019 which will pave the way for an additional 10,000 students to be served in high-quality afterschool programming. President Trump signed this bill into law at the end of September 2018. Conversations about funding for fiscal year 2020 will start up again in the next few months.

As the longest federal government shutdown in history continues, impacts to afterschool programs should be minimal. Funding for Education and Health and Human Services is not affected by the current appropriations negotiation since it had already passed in 2018. It is estimated that child nutrition programs for schools and afterschool programs will be safe through at least the end of March.

If you know of afterschool programs that are impacted by the government shudown, please share those stories with the IAA.
State Policy Update
The 2019 state legislative session kicked off this week. After elections last year, there are many new faces in the legislature. Republicans maintain control of the Senate, House, and the Governor's office.
