New Filene Report Explores Protecting Elderly Members from Financial Exploitation

"People helping people" has been at the heart of the credit union movement since it began. Being good stewards of members' money and helping improve their financial lives is the purpose of credit unions' every-day work. This is especially true for members who are most vulnerable.

The new report from Filene’s Center for Consumer Financial Lives in Transition explores the issues that the elderly, people with mental health disabilities, and those pre- and post- incarceration are challenged with. Read the report to learn about solutions credit unions can implement to help protect these members' financial health.

ICUL strategic partner Filene Research Institute explores issues vital to the future of credit unions and consumer finance through independent research and innovation.

Legal Tip: Small Claims

If a credit union has been unsuccessful in working with a member to resolve a dispute such as a delinquency or amount owed, the credit union may consider filing a small claims lawsuit for money judgment, if the total amount sought does not exceed $6,500 (excluding filing fee and court costs). Every Iowa county has a Small Claims Court where an individual or business can proceed with a lawsuit without having to use an attorney.
