Neighborhood News

Residents of Iowa Heartland Habitat's focus neighborhoods—Walnut and Church Row— have been actively working on projects and activities in their respective neighborhoods. We took a day to bring together residents from both neighborhoods, to pause and re-center our focus through a training on Authentic Community Engagement. Our facilitators for this training were from the Lupton Center, a group that has worked in the historic South Atlanta neighborhood in Atlanta, GA for many years.

One resident shared, "After yesterday I feel energized and hopeful for our neighborhood and my work in the community. I feel I have a starting point and tools that can actually be put to use and that I understand."

Each week as part of her work in the neighborhoods, Jenna Petersen, our Neighborhood Impact Coordinator, leads prayer walks.

Paul Greene and Diane Highnam joined her recently on a Church Row prayer walks and as they walked they also picked up trash.

Jenna said, "My observation today was that I realized we are loving our neighbors as ourselves through the trash pick-up. I picked up trash on others' properties just like I picked up trash in one of our empty lots. I felt like I was really living out the truth of the Bible and what Jesus teaches about truly serving others on today's prayer walk."

Insulation Made from Recycled Blue Jeans donated to Iowa Heartland Habitat

Blue Jeans Go Green transforms old denim into new useful products, such as building insulation, thermal packaging insulation, pet bed inserts, and more. Recently, they delivered, at no cost, an entire semi trailer worth of building insulation made of 80% recycled denim for Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity to use as we build and insulate houses. The insulation is the same size and for all purposes identical to what we would normally install - so it is a perfect donation for us! We estimate the trailer load will insulate 7 houses.
