Habitat for Humanity Midwest Regional Conference

Our team had the opportunity to attend the Habitat for Humanity Midwest Regional Conference in Rochester, MN. This three-day conference offered a variety of learning sessions as well as networking opportunities.

The sessions covered an assortment of topics, such as fundraising, marketing, retail strategies, volunteering, and so much more. It was a fantastic experience to connect with other affiliates, exchange ideas, and explore ways to strengthen our organization!

Teen Trust Award

Iowa Heartland Habitat was awarded a $3000 grant from the CFNEIA Teen Trust.

The grant will support our partnerships with Cedar Falls CAPs and Hawkeye Community Colleges Youth/We Build programs. These programs receive experiential learning opportunities on Habitat build sites.

Groundbreaking Ceremony

At 708 W 3rd St, the Rucker family began their journey by digging through the dirt, marking the first steps in building their forever home. As one of our two incredible Women Build families, the Ruckers are a testament to resilience and hope. We are beyond honored to support them in this meaningful project and help them create a brighter, more secure future. This home is more than just a place to live; it is a symbol of their strength, determination, and the promise of a new chapter in their lives.

Toxic Charity Book Read

Toxic Charity is a book by Robert Lupton that discusses how many well-intentioned charitable efforts actually harm those they intend to help by creating dependency. The book proposes a model of community development that emphasizes empowerment, sustainability, and dignity, rather than one-way giving.

We're so grateful to have read and discussed this book as a staff this spring! With an average of 10 staff participants over 6 weeks of learning, we are thrilled to have challenged our ways of thinking through this book. We highly recommend Toxic Charity as a helpful reading for anyone wanting to learn how to grow in their efforts to serve others!

Sips and Bites for Habitat

Sips and Bites for Habitat took place in Independence, with 60 people attending. Overall, the first Sips and Bites for Habitat was a successful event, raising a total of $10,352.50. The money will go back into Buchanan County towards building and repairing homes.

The event featured four different locations in Independence. Allerton Brewing Company, The Steeple Studio, The Brick Kitchen, and finally, Gedney Bakery and Coffeehouse. Each stop served various drinks, food, and information about Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity.

This event could not have been possible without the support of all of the sponsors: Precision Plumbing & Heating, Veridian Credit Union, Farmers State Bank, Arctic Seal, Smith D&L Insurance, First Presbyterian Church, Pries Enterprises, Wapsie Valley Creamery, Big Three Construction, MidAmerica Energy Foundation, Bank Iowa, and the four location sponsors. Thank you for your generosity and contributions.
