Advocating for Affordable Homeownership at the Iowa Capitol

Our Executive Director, Ali Parrish, and Development Director, Dusty Wilson, met with Representative Timi Brown-Powers and Representative Jerome Amos Jr. at the Iowa Capitol.

Habitat for Humanity leaders from all over Iowa were at the Iowa Capitol meeting with leaders to discuss affordable homeownership. Conversations focused on helping Iowans preserve their financial legacy through transfers on death deeds, increasing the supply and preservation of decent housing, and helping making housing affordable for all Iowans.

A Program Social to Remember

Our Program Social is a special time for Iowa Heartland Habitat partner families to connect with each other, as well as with our staff and board. It’s also an important opportunity to share how we’ll support them along their homeownership journey.

We were thrilled to gather with our newest partnering families starting their journey and those who are already on the path to homeownership.

A big thank you to First Congregational Church for hosting us in your beautiful space and to Karenda Holmes Kae's Catering for the delicious meal!

Jeff Weideman is our ReStore Volunteer of the Month. Jeff has been volunteering at the ReStore for three years, where he helps customers carry out their items and keeps the door department looking tidy and organized.

He retired from carpentry four years ago, bringing hands-on experience to his volunteer role. Jeff enjoys spending time fishing and exploring his creative side through art. Thank you, Jeff!

Why We Build

Meet Jon, our Home Repair Manager! He works alongside homeowners across our four counties to complete critical repairs—making homes safe, healthy, and accessible for families.

Jon’s favorite part of his role is meeting with applicants and helping them take care of their homes, ensuring they can continue to live in them safely and comfortably. He is very grateful to work for Iowa Heartland Habitat and truly loves his job.

If Jon were a tool, he’d be a pen—because every repair begins with listening, documenting, and creating a plan. Just like a pen, Jon helps turn ideas and needs into action that changes lives. Outside of work, Jon enjoys spending time with family and friends.

Construction Volunteer of the Month

Nickie Halvorson is a longtime volunteer, giving his time every Monday and Thursday for 13 years.

He loves painting, supporting fellow volunteers, and says his favorite project was 337 Almond St.

Outside of volunteering, Nickie enjoys

staying active and spending time with his family.

Thank you, Nickie!

Small-Town Support Leads to Big Impact

Local Butler County businesses are hosting a Giving Tree featuring tags with locally sourced items needed for a Parkersburg rehab project beginning later this spring. Community members are encouraged to purchase a tag and help make the project possible.

Several other rural groups and organizations have recently hosted fundraisers to support Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity. Parker Place Senior Care in Parkersburg is holding its first “Lunch for a Cause” on February 19th, while Waverly Health Center is raising funds through “Jean Fridays" in the month of February, and Bill Colwell Ford in Hudson donated $2,000 through its Drive 4 UR Community event.

Fundraisers like these provide vital support for building and repairing homes for local families, while also raising awareness, strengthening partnerships, and encouraging creative community involvement in Iowa Heartland Habitat’s mission.
