Iowa State Online Launches!

Iowa State Online, a newly formed unit within the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT), officially launched on January 3, 2023, centralizing expertise in online learning and delivery across campus into a single service center.

We will partner with colleges and departments to provide consistent marketing and branding, student support, and new online program development for Iowa State University online programs.

Iowa State Online (iowastateonline.iastate.edu) will be a central point of contact for prospective students exploring online programs at Iowa State University.

The CELT staff became a unit of approximately 45 individuals, working within the collaborative units of Course Design and Quality, Enterprise Instructional Technology, Instructor Development, and Iowa State Online. In spring 2023, we will be piloting our processes and services with selected courses, instructors, and programs.

Our resources continue to be available to all instructors at Iowa State University, with additional CELT service information made available throughout the spring and summer semesters of 2023. Please send any questions to [email protected].

2 Remaining Online Synchronous

Annual Inclusive Classroom Trainings

As we prepare for the spring 2023 semester, we wanted to remind you of the work we accomplished this past fall with the ISU Annual Inclusive Classroom Training (AY22-23) focus, “Supporting our students through a mindful and learner-centered syllabus.” One activity from the training was how to “make your syllabus matter,” where we discussed in small groups what was new, what works overall, and what works from page 2 in CELT’s Mindful and learner-centered syllabus toolkit (PDF). The overarching takeaway is not only to talk about the syllabus on the first day but continually refer to it as a guide for students to succeed in your course. You can find the recap here.

One faculty member shared this insight, “To make the syllabus a living document,” in their post-workshop reflection.

As a reminder, CELT is offering the online synchronous version of the Annual Inclusive Classroom Training (AY22-23) for:

  • Faculty who could not attend one of the scheduled departmental training sessions in F2022
  • Faculty and staff who would like to extend their learning by discussing a different scenario from their departmental training

Each of the two remaining online synchronous CELT-facilitated programs

will feature one AY22-23 Student-Centered Scenario to be discussed during

small-group work. To attend, select and sign up using one of the corresponding Zoom forms below:

CELT Spring Semester

Teaching Assistant (TA) Seminar

All TAs who are new to the ISU classroom or who have received a teaching assignment different from what they have done before are strongly encouraged to attend this seminar.

In this online workshop, teams of TAs will work together in breakout rooms to solve potential classroom scenarios on various topics such as academic dishonesty, classroom management, and inclusivity. A panel of experts will help TAs discuss appropriate steps to take when these situations occur in their classrooms.

Help us welcome your new TAs to the ISU classroom!
