Iowa State Online Update

Online Student Satisfaction Survey Findings - Part Two

In collaboration with a 2022-2023 Emerging Leaders Academy group, Iowa State Online developed a survey to assess awareness of current student services available online and overall student satisfaction. 175 students responded (23.7% response rate). Five themes were noted from the responses collected.

  • New online student orientation: Respondents indicated a need for an orientation more applicable to the online student population and assistance in learning university-sponsored platforms.


  • Availability and consistency of online offerings: Students reported that online courses are not offered consistently. Students find barriers to degree completion because of this inconsistency.


  • Community building and connectedness to ISU: Less than half (42%) strongly agreed with the statement, "As an online student, I feel connected to Iowa State University."


  • Online exams and proctoring: Greater support and clarity with completing online exams and finding suitable remote proctors. Students indicated that cost and the availability of proctors are hurdles.


  • Instructor understanding of online student population: General comments included the desire for prompt response to emails, the ability to access materials on a computer, and increased flexibility.


The results from this survey have established a baseline assessment of the online student experience at Iowa State University and will help Iowa State Online strategically plan effective university-wide services.
